Report: PSG to dismiss Pochettino, Leonardo after extending Mbappe

Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino and sporting director Leonardo are expected to leave their respective positions as the club prepares for a massive shake-up, according to The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano.

The news follows reports that star forward Kylian Mbappe will sign a new three-year contract with PSG.

Mbappe was set to run out his current deal and leave as a free agent once it expired June 30.

The 23-year-old has had an uneasy relationship with Leonardo and moved to oust him during recent meetings with PSG’s upper hierarchy, sources told ESPN’s Julien Laurens.

Mbappe reportedly recommended former AS Monaco and Lille director Luis Campos as a replacement. Campos – who discovered Mbappe in 2013 while scouting for Monaco and sold the player’s rights to PSG four years later for €180 million – is currently a free agent.

Mbappe’s relationship with Pochettino is less clear. The manager said in late April that he was confident he and Mbappe would remain in Paris next season.

Zinedine Zidane is an early favorite to replace Pochettino. The Frenchman – who won three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid from 2016-18 – is also a free agent after leaving the La Liga outfit last year.

Mbappe reportedly rejected the chance to join Madrid on a free transfer this summer after PSG significantly improved their offer. Recent reports indicated Los Blancos had reached an agreement on personal terms with the World Cup winner.

Madrid tried to sign Mbappe last summer, presenting multiple offers worth as much as €200 million but failing to secure his services. Leonardo slammed Madrid’s behavior in October, saying they showed a “lack of respect” and should face punishment for openly courting the player over the last two years.

Mbappe rejects Real Madrid, signs new 3-year deal with PSG

Kylian Mbappe’s winding transfer saga is over.

Despite reportedly agreeing to personal terms with Real Madrid earlier in the week, the French superstar stunningly reversed course Saturday, signing a new three-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 23-year-old was widely expected to land at the Santiago Bernabeu upon the expiration of his deal this summer. Instead, he’s inked a fresh pact to remain in Paris until June 2025.

The deal will make him one of the highest-paid players in football history, according to Tariq Panja of The New York Times.

“I am convinced that here I can continue to grow at a club that provides everything necessary to perform at the highest level,” Mbappe said in a statement. “I am also delighted to continue to play in France, the country where I was born, where I have grown up, and where I have made my name.”

Real Madrid were initially confident they had persuaded Mbappe to move to the Spanish capital. Their offer included a signing bonus of nearly $140 million, a net annual salary exceeding $26 million, and complete control of his lucrative image rights, Panja reports.

But a “much-improved” late offer from PSG played a key role in forcing his change of heart, sources told Julien Laurens and Rodrigo Faez of ESPN, with Real Madrid reportedly growing pessimistic about their deal in recent days. Mbappe personally called Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to inform him of his decision Saturday, according to multiple reports.

The move highlights the sport’s continued power shift away from legacy clubs like Real Madrid toward teams backed by oil-rich states – such as PSG. Outspoken La Liga president Javier Tebas branded the signing as an “insult to football.”

Missing out on the coveted forward is a huge blow to Los Blancos, who made Mbappe their primary target and pushed hard to land him last summer. PSG rejected a series of increasingly opulent offers before the season; the Spanish club’s final bid was reportedly worth up to €200 million.

PSG sporting director Leonardo publicly criticized Madrid in October for showing a “lack of respect” in their handling of the pursuit.

Mbappe had remained tight-lipped about his future, even after the French giants were drawn against Madrid in this season’s Champions League.

Mbappe – who has 169 goals and 79 assists in all competitions for PSG since joining them from AS Monaco for an eventual €180-million fee in 2017 – scored in each leg of their eventual last-16 ouster.

He’ll now continue to spearhead PSG’s protracted pursuit of an elusive Champions League title.

Borussia Dortmund part ways with manager Rose after one season

Manager Marco Rose and Borussia Dortmund have parted ways after just one season, the Bundesliga club announced Friday.

“The day was not an easy one for all of us, as we have all held each other in high regard and continue to do so,” Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said.

“After a season that was unsatisfactory for various reasons, we were forced to conclude that we did not achieve the maximum possible in many areas.”

Rose guided Borussia Dortmund to second place in the Bundesliga last season, eight points behind champions Bayern Munich.

However, Dortmund were relegated to the Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Ajax and Sporting CP. They were then upset in the first knockout round by eventual runners-up Rangers.

“Despite a difficult season with many uncertainties, I was convinced by our path,” Rose said.

“During our discussion, I developed the impression there was no longer 100% conviction among all those responsible. We, therefore, ultimately decided together to end the cooperation.”

Dortmund will begin their search for a new manager in the coming days.

Report: PSG give up on Mbappe with move to Real Madrid imminent

Paris Saint-Germain have given up on re-signing Kylian Mbappe after learning the 23-year-old has an agreement with Real Madrid, sources told ESPN’s Julien Laurens.

Mbappe, whose contract with PSG expires June 30, reportedly agreed to terms with Madrid on Monday.

The Ligue 1 giants had held out hope they could still persuade him to extend his stay in Paris, but sources told Laurens that Mbappe was set on fulfilling his dream of playing for Madrid.

PSG believed as recently as last week Mbappe would sign an extension, according to Laurens. French outlet Le Parisien reported earlier in May that PSG offered the prolific forward a two-year deal worth around €50 million per season, along with a loyalty bonus of €100 million.

The club’s offer included promises to make Mbappe captain, Laurens reported Tuesday. PSG would also have allowed him to keep 100% of his image rights.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino seemed confident he’d coach Mbappe in Paris next season, saying in April that he was “100%” sure they’d remain together at the Parc des Princes.

But the player now seems set to join Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Mbappe said Sunday he was “almost” ready to decide his future and that he’d make an announcement before France’s Nations League game against Denmark on June 3.

Mbappe has spent the past five seasons with PSG, notching 169 goals and 79 assists in 246 games for the club. He’s expected to make his final appearance Saturday at home to Metz.
