3 ways Manchester City could line up with Jack Grealish

Manchester City are reportedly putting the final touches on a £100-million move for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish. It’s a deal that would break the Premier League transfer record and make the 25-year-old the most expensive British player in history.

The prospect of Grealish parading his bouncy boy-band hair and pulled-down socks in Pep Guardiola’s XI is as exciting for City fans as it is ominous for the Mancunians’ domestic and European rivals. The Englishman was one of the most productive players in the Premier League last season, despite plying his trade for a team that finished 11th.

Below, theScore picks out the three ways Grealish could be utilized by Guardiola.

On the left

The most common Grealish sighting involves him haring down the left, weaving through opponents until he’s hacked down by an irritated center-half.

This, then, would be the most obvious spot for Grealish to line up for City, but his selection would likely come at the cost of two bona-fide stars: Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling. Though Foden can operate as a No. 8 or false nine, he was regularly deployed to the left of City’s attack last season while Sterling’s club form tailed off.

One of the huge question marks over this setup – and, indeed, those listed below – is whether Harry Kane moves to the Etihad Stadium this summer. Kane’s ability to withdraw from a traditional striker position and create, in addition to his clinical play in front of goal, could help forge a devastating partnership with Grealish in attack – a pricey version of the Birmingham-born star’s fine understanding with Ollie Watkins at Villa.

No. 8

This is an increasingly popular way for Guardiola to shape his attack in the coming years, with sources telling The Athletic’s Sam Lee that the City boss initially views Grealish as a midfielder to rotate with Ilkay Gundogan. Grealish has significant experience as a No. 8 for Villa, often using the position as a springboard for more attacks down the left flank or half-space.

This lineup promises thrilling interplay between Grealish and Foden, while Kevin De Bruyne’s fluid positioning in a false-nine role helped Gundogan amass a career-high 17 goals during the 2020-21 campaign. The biggest doubt over this selection is Bernardo Silva’s inclusion, with Lee reporting the club expects the Portuguese playmaker to depart this summer following Grealish’s arrival.

With or without Silva, this midfield and frontline is frightening. If the above attack remained the same, alternatives to Silva in midfield could be Gundogan, ersatz left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko, academy products such as Tommy Doyle or Cole Palmer, or an extra defensive presence in Fernandinho.

False nine

This doesn’t feel right from what we’ve seen of Grealish’s career so far, but playing as a false nine seems to be a rite of passage for Guardiola’s midfielders and wingers. Almost everybody has done it, with Ferran Torres even getting picked as a true No. 9 during some 2020-21 Champions League group matches.

The positional versatility of Guardiola’s side reached new heights last season and the personnel in this lineup could take it one step further. Each of the five players furthest up the park can shift into the false-nine post and other areas throughout matches, leaving defenses looking like revelers staggering out of pubs and clubs on Manchester’s Oxford Road in the early hours.

The extra options that Grealish’s arrival would provide Guardiola make him an ideal signing for the club. It’s a transfer that should raise expectations as City set out to defend their Premier League title and aim to go one better in the Champions League following last term’s final defeat.

Varane on his way to Manchester United after deal agreed in principle

Raphael Varane is ready to leave Real Madrid after 10 years.

Manchester United reached an agreement to sign the 28-year-old from Los Blancos, the Premier league side announced Tuesday.

Varane will sign a four-year contract and the Red Devils will pay £34 million plus a potential £8 million in add-ons, BBC Sport’s Simon Stone reports.

Varane became one of the game’s preeminent center-backs in the Spanish capital, winning 18 trophies – including four Champions League titles and three La Liga crowns – over 360 appearances with Madrid.

Acquired as a relative unknown from RC Lens in 2011, the Frenchman supplanted Pepe in the starting lineup in 2014-15, eventually forming a cohesive partnership with Sergio Ramos.

Madrid allowed Varane to leave with one year remaining on his contract.

The World Cup winner – known for his pace, aerial ability, and sense of calmness – is expected to anchor United’s backline alongside Harry Maguire. Victor Lindelof, Maguire’s partner for the last two seasons, and Eric Bailly will lose significant minutes as a result.

It’s not immediately clear if Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti will request a replacement for Varane. Though the club signed center-back David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich earlier in the transfer window, Ancelotti’s only other senior options are Eder Militao, Nacho Fernandez, and Jesus Vallejo.

Los Blancos could use the windfall to cover losses from the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent accounts show the club surrendered €300 million in revenue since March 2020.

Varane will be United’s third signing of the summer after goalkeeper Tom Heaton and winger Jadon Sancho, bringing the club’s total spending to around £108 million.

Report: Manchester United on verge of signing Varane from Real Madrid

Manchester United are in the final stages of completing a deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, according to Rob Dawson of ESPN.

Varane has agreed to a four-year contract which includes an option for a fifth, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Real Madrid are expected to receive £35 million, plus add-ons, but will be forced to provide a solidarity payment to Varane’s training clubs, Ornstein adds. As a result, United will pay £34 million, plus add-ons, to Madrid over a number of years rather than in one installment.

Completion of the deal is contingent on Varane passing a medical.

Varane, who’s in the final year of his contract, reportedly notified Real Madrid last week of his desire to pursue another opportunity after 10 years in the Spanish capital.

Madrid were holding out for €50 million, but United were confident that they could snag the 2018 World Cup winner for a reduced fee, Dawson reports.

If Real Madrid had failed complete a deal this summer, the club risked losing the center-back for free next year when his contract expires.

The 28-year-old has won four Champions League titles and a trio of La Liga trophies with Real Madrid since his arrival in 2011.

Report: Varane wants to leave Madrid, United ready to make offer

Manchester United are preparing a bid to sign center-back Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, according to The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano and Marcus Christenson.

It’s understood the Premier League side will offer Varane a five-year contract.

The 2018 World Cup winner is willing to accept the deal after notifying Real Madrid on Monday that he wants to leave after 10 years in the Spanish capital, Romano adds.

United held talks with Varane’s representatives earlier this summer, as the French international was reluctant to sign an extension at Real Madrid before exploring other options, according to Rob Dawson of ESPN.

Real Madrid are holding out for €50 million, but United may attempt to persuade them to accept a lower fee given the Red Devils’ financial restraints following the €84.5 million paid for Jadon Sancho, Dawson adds.

Varane has evolved into one of the world’s top defenders since joining Real Madrid from Lens in 2011 and has won just about every major trophy – including four Champions League titles – at the club level.
