7 medical professionals charged with homicide in Maradona's death

The personal doctor of Diego Maradona and six other medical professionals have been charged with “simple homicide with eventual intent” in the death of the Argentine football legend.

Leopoldo Luque, the doctor who treated Maradona after he underwent surgery for a brain blood clot weeks before dying last year, and the others face eight to 25 years in prison if found guilty.

Maradona died of heart failure on Nov. 25, 2020, at the age of 60.

Luque denied any wrongdoing and insisted he treated Maradona to the best of his abilities.

However, recordings leaked to Argentine media of conversations between medical professionals and those close to Maradona indicate that care for the World Cup winner was inadequate.

Earlier this month, a medical panel concluded that Maradona received “deficient and reckless” care prior to dying.

The panel was appointed by prosecutors to look into allegations that the medical team didn’t offer adequate treatment.

It was also suspected Maradona wasn’t being properly monitored on the day of his death, and that he was seriously unwell 12 hours before dying.

Court proceedings are set to begin on May 31.

Maradona, who won the World Cup in 1986, enjoyed successful domestic spells at Barcelona, ??Napoli, Sevilla, Boca Juniors, and Argentinos Juniors.

Report: Kane requests summer transfer from Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane has told the club he wants to leave in the summer, The Telegraph’s Matt Law reports.

The 27-year-old would reportedly prefer to stay in the Premier League, with Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United considered the most likely destinations. City and United appear to see Kane as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

It’s unclear if Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will let Kane go, especially to a rival in the same league. Levy apparently values him at around £150 million.

However, Spurs insist the striker isn’t for sale, according to The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke.

The Athletic also reported in April that Kane would demand a transfer if Tottenham failed to make the Champions League. Though they’re not mathematically eliminated, Spurs remain a distant five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with just two matches remaining.

Kane has made it clear he wants to win trophies, and that desire is intensifying as he enters his prime. He’s yet to win a title in seven years with the club, a drought that continued with last month’s defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup final.

“Individual awards are great. They’re fantastic achievements. At the end of my career, these are things I will go over and take in a little bit more. But the goal right now as a player is to win team trophies,” Kane said last month. “As much as this is great, I want to be winning the biggest prizes there is to offer as a team, and we’re not quite doing that.”

Interim manager Ryan Mason later suggested Kane’s future doesn’t depend on Champions League qualification.

“Harry Kane loves this football club. That’s been proven over the last seven or eight years. He’s one of the best strikers in the world,” Mason said. “Everyone knows that, we know that, and I’d like to think Harry knows that as well.”

Ronaldo's mother wants him to return to Sporting next season

If Cristiano Ronaldo’s mother has her way, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will play in Portugal next season.

Dolores Aveiro said Wednesday that she will try to convince Ronaldo to leave Juventus and return to boyhood club Sporting CP in the summer. The 36-year-old began his career at Sporting, making his debut at 17 before joining Manchester United in 2003.

“I’ll talk to him to bring him back,” Ronaldo’s 66-year-old mother, an avid Sporting supporter, said, according to Reuters. “Next year, he will play in Alvalade (Sporting’s stadium).”

Aveiro was speaking to Sporting fans from her balcony as they celebrated the club’s first domestic title in 19 years.

Ronaldo still has one year left on his contract but could leave Juventus if the club misses out on the Champions League for the first time in a decade. The Bianconeri are currently in fifth place, one point behind fourth-placed Napoli with just two games remaining.

Juventus are also struggling financially due to the effects of the pandemic. The former Serie A champions – dethroned by rivals Inter Milan after a nine-year title run – recorded a loss of €113 million from July 2020 to December 2020, with further losses expected at the end of the fiscal year.

Ronaldo, who reportedly earns €30 million after taxes, scored his 100th goal for the club in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Sassuolo.

Report: Defiant Super League clubs could face 2-year Champions League ban

Teams involved in the European Super League that refuse to distance themselves from the failed project could face a two-year ban from the Champions League or Europa League, Gabriele Marcotti of ESPN reports.

The reported potential punishment represents the most severe sanction at UEFA’s disposal.

Seven of the 12 clubs involved in the project – Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur – have engaged in discussions and reached an understanding with UEFA, sources told Marcotti.

Those seven teams are reportedly attempting to agree to lesser punishments and have also pledged they will not attempt to reignite efforts to form the Super League.

It’s understood Inter Milan are also close to reaching a similar agreement.

The other four teams – AC Milan, Barcelona, Juventus, and Real Madrid – are still committed to the formation of a Super League, Marcotti reports. The quartet apparently believes the original documents filed during the creation of the competition protect the sides from severe sanctions.

UEFA could seek to sanction teams for violating Article 51 of its statutes, which reads: “No combinations or alliances between … clubs affiliated, directly or indirectly, to different UEFA Member Associations may be formed without the permission of UEFA.”

UEFA has yet to formally begin disciplinary proceedings, Marcotti adds, as doing so would constitute a violation of an injunction granted in a court ruling in Madrid.

The sport’s governing body is reportedly hopeful it will reach an agreement with one or two more teams; the Super League’s original statutes reportedly dictate that the league will be formally disbanded if nine of the 12 clubs drop out.

Those teams that pull out of the project could reportedly be set for a legal battle with the four remaining clubs for violating the terms of the initial Super League agreement.
