By the numbers: Werner mercifully ends 100-day EPL scoring drought

Timo Werner could only laugh as referee Peter Bankes confirmed his goal Monday against Newcastle United. He’d waited 100 days to score in the Premier League, so of course, he’d have to wait a moment longer.

The Video Assistant Referee found no reason to overturn Werner’s first-half effort, an opportunistic finish off a corner kick. Werner, Chelsea’s embattled summer signing, could breathe.

The goal – which clinched a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge – was his first in the Premier League since a 4-1 result on Nov. 7 against Sheffield United.

Now that Werner’s brought a merciful end to his scoring drought, here are the numbers that put it into incredible context.

1: The number of posts Werner hit during his barren spell. He cracked the crossbar with what looked like an easy tap-in toward the end of a dominant 3-0 win on Dec. 21 against West Ham United. Werner’s hit the woodwork five times in the Premier League this season – more than any other player.

4: Werner played in four different attacking positions since he last scored in the Premier League. After spells as a lone striker, winger, and attacking midfielder, the 24-year-old broke his duck as a left-sided forward in Thomas Tuchel’s new 3-4-3 formation.

14: The number of appearances Werner made between goals in the Premier League. He started 11 of those matches.

31: Werner fired 31 shots before finally finding the back of the net. Former manager Frank Lampard and current boss Tuchel repeatedly credited the German for being active and involved.

100: The number of days between goals in the Premier League. It doesn’t, however, constitute the longest drought of his career. Werner went 196 days without a goal between stints at Stuttgart and RB Leipzig in 2016.

1,000: Werner’s Premier League scoring drought lasted exactly 1,000 minutes.

RB Leipzig's Upamecano agrees to join Bayern this summer

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic announced the club has reached an agreement to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

Salihamidzic confirmed the news to Sport Bild’s Christian Falk, adding that the 22-year-old center-back will arrive at Bayern this summer on a five-year contract.

There’s reportedly a release clause in the French international’s Leipzig contract worth around €45 million.

Salihamidzic initially went public with Bayern’s interest in the highly-rated defender last month, confirming reports that the Bavarians were in talks to sign Upamecano.

It’s understood that Bayern view Upamecano as an ideal replacement for David Alaba, who’s expected to depart the club after over 10 years when his contract expires this summer.

Chelsea and Liverpool were recently linked with Upamecano, while Manchester United have shifted their attention to other targets after showing interest last summer.

Upamecano has appeared in over 100 matches in all competitions for RB Leipzig since his arrival from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017.

Neymar to miss PSG's clash with Barcelona due to injury

Neymar will miss Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League match against Barcelona next week after picking up an adductor injury.

The injury is expected to sideline the 29-year-old for up to four weeks, PSG announced Thursday.

“Neymar Jr. suffered a lesion to the left adductor on Wednesday evening. After analysis of clinical exams and scans, it is expected that he’ll be out for around four weeks depending on the evolution of the injury,” the team stated.

PSG take on Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 meeting on Feb. 16 at the Camp Nou.

The timeframe provided by PSG suggests Neymar could be available for the second leg on March 10 at the Parc des Princes.

The Brazilian star suffered the knock during PSG’s win over Caen on Wednesday when he was brought down by a heavy challenge in the second half.

Report: Manchester City quietly tracking Messi's situation at Barcelona

Manchester City are waiting until the right moment to make another move for Lionel Messi.

Unlike Paris Saint-Germain, who’ve publicly courted the Argentine in recent months, City are keeping a low profile in the hopes of securing his exit from Barcelona, sources told ESPN’s Moises Llorens and Rodrigo Faez.

PSG have reportedly angered officials at Barcelona with their aggressive tactics. Sporting director Leonardo, manager Mauricio Pochettino, and former teammate and friend Neymar have all made it clear they would like to have Messi in Paris.

City have yet to make any such comments about the 33-year-old’s future. Manager Pep Guardiola has even called on the six-time Ballon d’Or winner to finish his career at Barcelona.

A source told ESPN that Messi doesn’t like “all that noise in the media” and that PSG are “making a mistake” by pursuing him publicly.

In December, Neymar expressed his desire to reunite with Messi next season, saying, “I want to play with him for sure.” Neymar and Leonardo reportedly discussed plans to sign Messi last summer.

Angel Di Maria, one of Messi’s international teammates on the Argentinian national team, fueled rumors when he said earlier this month that there’s a “big possibility” Messi will join PSG.

Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman said PSG were being disrespectful with their comments, and that Di Maria in particular showed a “lack of respect.”

City appear to have adopted a much quieter approach. Since Guardiola spoke to Messi on the phone last year, a number of people on City’s staff have reportedly remained in contact with the player’s entourage.

As a pending free agent, Messi is now allowed to negotiate with other teams and sign a pre-contract agreement with any club. He recently promised to wait until the end of the season to make a decision.
