Messi decides to stay at Barcelona

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story contained a quote attributed to Lionel Messi by The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano in which Messi calls Barcelona’s management a “disaster.” Romano deleted his tweet, and the reference has been removed from our article.

Se queda.

Lionel Messi, who informed Barcelona last week of his intention to leave, announced Friday that he is, reluctantly, staying at the club.

“I told the club, including the president, that I wanted to go. I’ve been telling him that all year. I believed it was time to step aside,” Messi said in an interview with Goal.

Messi will now see out the remainder of his contract, which expires in June 2021. Unless he signs an extension, he’ll be allowed to leave next summer on a free transfer.

Manchester City were reportedly considered the favorites to sign Messi if he managed to break away from Barcelona.

Messi said he couldn’t bear the idea of suing Barcelona, the club he joined as 13-year-old with a growth hormone deficiency.

“It has hurt me a lot that things are published against me and, above all, that false things are published,” he told Goal. “Or that they came to think that I could go to trial against Barca in order to benefit myself.

“I would never do such a thing. I repeat, I wanted to go and it was entirely my right, because the contract said that I could be released. And it is not, ‘I’m leaving and that’s it.’ I was leaving, and it cost me a lot.

“I wanted to go because I thought about living my last years of football happily. Lately, I have not found happiness within the club.”

Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday to demand his son’s release, according to reports, citing a now-infamous clause that allows the 33-year-old to unilaterally terminate his contract at the end of each season. Barcelona, however, insisted the clause expired in June.

Bartomeu reportedly made it clear during a two-hour meeting with Jorge that any team interested in signing the six-time Ballon d’Or winner would have to pay his €700-million release clause. La Liga threw its support behind the club, confirming the release clause is valid.

Messi Sr. said upon his arrival that it would be “difficult” for his son to stay at Barcelona, and the events leading up to this point suggested as much. Lionel Messi sent an official document Aug. 25 – shortly after the calamitous 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals – to tell the club he was terminating his contract. His camp reportedly argued the termination clause was still valid because the season was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

But Messi insisted his initial decision had nothing do with the loss to Bayern.

“Everything became very difficult for me, and there came a time when I considered looking for new ambitions,” he added. “It did not come because of the Champions League result against Bayern, no – I had been thinking about the decision for a long time.”

With a court case looming, Messi boycotted Barcelona’s first preseason training session Monday. He also missed the club’s first round of coronavirus testing, which is required for all players to participate in training.

All the while, City had remained on alert. Messi was reportedly in contact with the Premier League side and keen on a move. Conversations with City manager and former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola apparently took place days after Barcelona were eliminated from the Champions League.

Messi was also linked with PSG, Inter Milan, and Juventus.

Report: Barcelona's meeting with Messi Sr. ends without resolution

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and Lionel Messi’s father could not reach an agreement over the player’s future during a slightly tense meeting Wednesday, sources told ESPN’s Rodrigo Faez and Moises Llorens.

Messi’s father, Jorge, flew to Barcelona demanding his son’s release, citing a now-infamous clause that allows him to unilaterally terminate his contract at the end of each season.

The two sides will hold another meeting, according to Faez and Llorens, but have not determined a date.

During the two-hour meeting, Bartomeu reportedly insisted the clause is no longer valid, Messi remains under contract until June 2021, and teams interested in signing the 33-year-old will have to pay his €700-million release clause.

Messi Sr. told local reporters it will be “difficult” for his son to stay at Barcelona – where he’s played all 16 years of his professional career – but denied talking to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

When asked about a potential move to the Premier League side, Messi Sr. said, “There’s nothing yet.”

Messi skipped Barcelona’s first preseason training session Monday due to the ongoing dispute. His legal team believes he’s no longer under contract and has no responsibility to show up to training.

The club says the termination clause expired in June, but Messi’s camp argues the Blaugrana should have extended the deadline because of the season delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

City are considered the favorites to land the six-time Ballon d’Or winner if he ends up leaving Barcelona. Messi has also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, and Juventus.

Manchester United land Dutch midfielder Van de Beek for potential €44M fee

Manchester United reinforced their midfield Wednesday with the signing of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.

Ajax confirmed the deal is worth €39 million, plus a potential €5 million in add-ons.

Van de Beek put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Red Devils after completing a medical in the Netherlands.

He’ll now join the Dutch national team ahead of Nations League matches against Poland and Italy.

“Donny has all of the technical attributes needed to perform in this team and has the personality required to succeed at Manchester United,” manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said in a statement. “His ability to see space, time his movements, and read the game will really complement the qualities that we have in midfield, and his arrival really strengthens the depth of talent we have in that position.”

The 23-year-old – who played a key role in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semifinals in 2018-19 – drew interest from Real Madrid before receiving an offer from United.

Barcelona were reportedly interested in signing Van de Beek, a personal favorite of newly appointed Dutch manager Ronald Koeman, but were unable to finance a move.

A two-way midfielder who can sweep up and join the attack, Van de Beek made his senior debut as an 18-year-old in the Europa League against Celtic. He earned his first start in the Eredivisie three days later in a win over PEC Zwolle.

Overall, Van de Beek recorded 41 goals and 34 assists in 175 appearances with Ajax.

“I would like to thank everyone at Ajax. I grew up there and I will always have a special bond with the club,” Van De Beek said. “I am now ready to take the next step in my career and perform at the highest level, and there is no higher standard than Manchester United.”

Solskjaer now has a ton of creativity in his squad. With Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, and Van de Beek combining in midfield, the Red Devils have an envious rotation of players to feed the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Anthony Martial.

A bid for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, however, has yet to materialize.

Report: Messi's father meeting Barcelona president to settle dispute

Lionel Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, will urge Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu to release his son from his contract when the two meet Wednesday in the Catalan capital, sources told ESPN’s Moises Llorens and Alex Kirkland.

Bartomeu will reportedly counter with a two-year contract extension.

Jorge Messi is flying from Argentina to arrange his son’s departure from Barcelona, the only club he’s ever played for. Messi’s camp argues he’s already rescinded his contract, having activated a termination clause that allows him to walk away. But the club maintains that Messi’s €700-million release clause is still valid and any team interested in signing the six-time Ballon d’Or winner must pay it in full.

Messi was absent from Barcelona’s first preseason training session Monday, further escalating tensions between the two sides. He also missed the club’s first round of coronavirus testing Sunday.

Victor Font, a candidate in Barcelona’s upcoming presidential elections, told Sky Sports it’s unlikely Messi will reverse his decision to leave.

“There’s always hope, and therefore I really hope that the decision can be changed,” Font said. “It doesn’t seem likely, and therefore, if that’s not going to be possible, the focus should be to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible and that the ties between Messi and Barcelona, that go very deep, remain there so that we can ensure that, somehow, the relationship continues in the future.”

Manchester City are considered the favorites to land the 33-year-old and are reportedly prepared to offer Barcelona a player-plus-cash package worth up to €150 million.

Messi’s contract with the Blaugrana expires in June 2021.
