Report: UEFA asks countries to let Euro 2020 happen

UEFA is asking governments across Europe to ensure this summer’s Euro 2020 goes ahead, a source told Rob Harris of the Associated Press.

European football’s administrative body has been working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to devise ways to reduce the risks of infection across the 12 countries set to host matches in the 24-team tournament.

The WHO told UEFA that it doesn’t expect the virus to be contained by the time the European Championship kicks off on June 12, but the soccer organization is determined for the tournament to be played with fans in attendance. UEFA will allow cities to stage games if they have the medical infrastructure to treat the patients while still having the capability to put on events with tens of thousands of people, Harris explains.

Euro 2020 is set to be the first pan-European edition of the competition.

Brussels has already been stripped of matches due to an unfinished stadium, with London subsequently being rewarded extra fixtures.

Current host venues at Euro 2020:

Stadium City Country
Allianz Arena Munich Germany
Arena Nationala Bucharest Romania
Aviva Stadium Dublin Ireland
Hampden Park Glasgow Scotland
Johan Cruyff Arena Amsterdam Netherlands
Krestovsky Stadium Saint Petersburg Russia
Olympic Stadium Baku Azerbaijan
Parken Stadium Copenhagen Denmark
Puskas Arena Budapest Hungary
San Mames Bilbao Spain
Stadio Olimpico Rome Italy
Wembley Stadium London England

There were reports that European football federations had asked UEFA to move Euro 2020 to the following year. However, UEFA refuted these accounts, telling the Associated Press that it “has had no requests to move or cancel the tournament.”

Numerous elite sporting events have been postponed throughout Europe, with the continent’s worst-hit nation, Italy, currently imposing travel restrictions on its entire 60-million population and even barring public events such as funerals and weddings until April 3. Football matches are unsurprisingly included in those measures.

Despite the worsening situation across the continent, UEFA insists it’s taking the threat “very seriously.”

The body added in its statement: “We are closely monitoring the situation and are in contact with the World Health Organisation and national authorities regarding its development.”

Over 113,000 people have tested positive for globally and 4,000 have died due to the infection, according to figures from CNN.

Alisson ruled out of decisive Atletico match after training injury

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is ruled out of Wednesday’s crucial Champions League home leg against Atletico Madrid after picking up an injury in training, the club confirmed Friday.

“Muscle, slight, in the hip region. A small muscle,” manager Jurgen Klopp said of the injury, which was suffered ahead of the team’s midweek FA Cup loss to Chelsea. “You (reporters) could all do your work still but a professional goalkeeper is slightly different. That’s the situation.”

Alisson was subsequently left out of the Brazil squad for the national team’s World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru at the end of March. His lack of availability for those fixtures indicates he may also miss Liverpool’s meetings with Everton and Crystal Palace before the international break and won’t return to fitness until April.

The 27-year-old, who’s widely dubbed as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, has kept 14 clean sheets across 28 matches in all competitions this season. Backup Adrian, by comparison, has only three clean sheets in 16 outings.

Jordan Henderson is still sidelined for the Bournemouth tilt, but Klopp seemed more positive about the captain’s involvement in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie with Atleti. He said the midfielder “has a chance” to overcome his thigh problem for that game, according to Thomas Mallows of BBC Sport.

Liverpool enter the reverse fixture against Atletico Madrid with a 1-0 disadvantage. Saul Niguez scored the only goal during the first leg as the Reds failed to register a shot on target at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Guardiola: Laporte to miss 3-4 weeks with hamstring injury

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte is expected to miss three-to-four weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the last-16 clash against Real Madrid earlier this week, manager Pep Guardiola confirmed Friday, reports BBC Sport.

The French defender, who’d recently returned from a serious knee injury, limped out of City’s 2-1 Champions League win in Madrid on Wednesday. It was only his eighth appearance of the season.

“He has a hamstring injury, three weeks out, more or less a month,” Guardiola told reporters. “Unfortunately this happens after four or five months out.”

Laporte, 25, underwent surgery in September to repair cartilage and lateral meniscus damage in his right knee.

He returned to action in January and was being eased back into the rotation; the match against Real Madrid was just his fourth appearance since rejoining the squad.

Guardiola, who’s described Laporte as the “best left-sided central defender in the world,” admitted after the crucial midweek victory that it may have been a “risk” to start the Frenchman at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Laporte lasted 33 minutes before being replaced by Fernandinho, who’s been deputizing at center-back in his absence.

“Life is not easy and always in the world, the people who survive are the ones who cope with the bad moments,” Guardiola added.

“It is what it is. Accept it, work hard to come back as soon as possible.”

The three-to-four week timeline means Laporte will miss the upcoming derby against Manchester United and will likely sit out the return Champions League fixture versus Real Madrid on March 17. Barring a setback, he should be fit for the league clash with Liverpool and the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals if City get there.

Lewandowski to miss 4 weeks after injuring knee against Chelsea

Bayern Munich will be without Robert Lewandowski for the next four weeks after the club confirmed the prolific Polish striker suffered a knee injury in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Chelsea.

The timeline means Lewandowski, who leads both the Bundesliga and Champions League in scoring this season, will miss the second leg of Bayern’s last-16 clash with the Blues on March 18.

Barring any setbacks, he should be fit ahead of the quarterfinals, assuming the Bavarian giants make good on their hefty first-leg advantage and advance to the last eight.

Lewandowski scored the last of Bayern’s three goals Tuesday, bringing his Champions League tally on the campaign to 11 – one more than Borussia Dortmund phenom Erling Braut Haaland.

The 31-year-old played the full 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Manager Hansi Flick will likely turn to versatile veteran Thomas Muller in Lewandowski’s absence. The 30-year-old German has played in various positions across the frontline throughout his career and should slot into a central role over the next month.

In addition to the return fixture against Chelsea, Lewandowski is expected to miss his side’s upcoming matches against Hoffenheim, Schalke, Augsburg, Union Berlin, and Eintracht Frankfurt.
