Messi out of El Clasico, will miss 3 weeks with arm fracture

It could have been a lot worse.

Hours after collapsing to the Camp Nou pitch in noticeable pain, Lionel Messi has avoided long-term injury, with Barcelona confirming late Saturday that the Argentine attacker is set to miss “approximately three weeks” with a broken radial bone in his right arm.

The injury rules Messi out of next weekend’s El Clasico in the Catalan capital against rival Real Madrid. Barcelona’s top scorer will also miss Wednesday’s Champions League visit from Inter and, in all likelihood, the return fixture at the San Siro on Nov. 6.

Messi, 31, was injured when he and Sevilla’s Franco Vazquez were entangled during the first half of Saturday’s league clash, falling awkwardly on his right arm just five minutes after doubling the host’s lead. He was subbed for Ousmane Dembele shortly after and Barcelona went on to a 4-2 victory, which sees them vault Los Rojiblancos for top spot in La Liga.

Ernesto Valverde’s charges enter the midweek continental clash sitting first in Group B on six points, level with Inter but boasting a superior goal differential.

Manchester United punished for tardiness in Valencia draw

UEFA fined Manchester United €15,000 on Friday for their late team arrival and kickoff during Valencia’s Champions League visit on Oct. 2.

Jose Mourinho initially blamed Greater Manchester Police for his squad turning up at Old Trafford 45 minutes late, but the local constabulary fired back by saying its risk assessment found the team bus to be under no significant threat of harm. That meant the bus wasn’t granted a police escort for the three-mile trip between Salford’s Lowry Hotel and Old Trafford.

UEFA details United’s punishment as €5,000 for a late arrival and €10,000 for a late kickoff, and also reveals a warning was submitted to Mourinho for the kickoff infraction. Valencia were warned for the late kickoff and a kit infringement and had to pay €1,000 for the setting off of fireworks.

The pair played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw in Stretford and will lock horns again to conclude Group H on Dec. 12.

Liverpool's Keita sent to hospital after leaving on stretcher

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita was hospitalized Wednesday night after complaining of back pain.

Keita was stretchered off the pitch in the first half of Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Napoli, and, according to a club statement, was sent to a nearby hospital for precautionary reasons.

Jordan Henderson replaced Keita after just 20 minutes.

“No decision has yet been taken on when the 23-year-old will be discharged,” the club added.

Keita appeared to injure himself after a collision with Napoli playmaker Lorenzo Insigne. He held his back while waiting for treatment on the pitch.

He earned the nod ahead of Henderson for the away trip to the San Paolo – Keita’s sixth start in all competitions since joining the Reds in the summer.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has tried to ease Keita into the lineup, but the severity of the Guinean international’s injury could force the German to reshuffle his midfield yet again.

Any potential setback would hurt Liverpool both in the short and long term, with a marquee clash coming on Sunday against Manchester City.

Usain Bolt rejects 2-year deal with Maltese club

Usain Bolt remains on trial with the Central Coast Mariners after rejecting a two-year contract to help boost Maltese club Valletta FC’s chances of reaching the Champions League.

The 32-year-old scored twice in a trial match for the Australian side on Saturday, drawing attention across the globe to the Jamaican sprinter’s bid to earn a deal in professional soccer. Bolt’s agent has suggested his client is receiving plenty of offers aside from Valletta’s approach, so may bide his time in making a decision.

“There is a lot of interest in Usain playing football,” Ricky Simms told ESPN’s Tom Hamilton. “We regularly receive similar approaches. I can confirm Usain does not wish to pursue this opportunity in Malta.”

Valletta CEO and managing director Ghasston Slimen responded by saying an “offer is always on the table” for Bolt to join.

The A-League season begins in Australia on Friday, with the Mariners beginning their campaign two days later at Brisbane Roar. Bolt is ineligible for that fixture, and likely all the Mariners’ matches until Jan. 3, 2019, when the league’s next registration period opens. Central Coast CEO Shaun Mielekamp has been noncommittal on Bolt’s fixture in Gosford, stating “it’s too early to tell” whether the eight-time Olympic gold medalist will clinch a contract off the back of his long-term trial.

Bolt, a keen Manchester United supporter, has previously trained with the Bundesliga’s Borussia Dortmund and Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset, and has been a regular on the charity game circuit. His spell in Australia is the first time he has determinedly pursued a professional spell in the game, and Mielekamp insisted in July that his training with the Central Coast Mariners is “not a stunt or gimmick.”

Bolt’s involvement in warm-up games has drawn thousands of attendees, when in the past those events only drew a few hundred spectators.
