Homecoming offers Man City's Sane chance to show Germany what it missed

London – Manchester City travel to Hoffenheim on Tuesday desperately needing a win to kickstart a Champions League campaign that began with a shock 2-1 defeat to Lyon for the competition favourites.

There should therefore be no shortage of motivation for Pep Guardiola’s men, but one member of the City squad will be especially keen to make a big impression back on German soil.

Leroy Sane was one of the stars of City’s romp to a record 100 Premier League points and the League Cup last season. The 22-year-old was crowned Young Player of the Year in England thanks to a stellar return of 14 goals and 19 assists in all competitions.

However, that still wasn’t enough to earn him a place in Germany’s World Cup squad as Sane was surprisingly cut from Joachim Loew’s 23.

Sane may have had the last laugh as the defending champions crashed out in the group stages — the first time in 80 years Germany had fallen at the first hurdle.

The pace, direct running and eye for a quick shot at goal possessed by the former Schalke winger were all traits missing from a laboured and predictable Germany in Russia.

Let down by body language

Yet, there was no time for Sane to feel vindicated as on his return to club duty he was similarly shunned by Guardiola, sparking doubts over his attitude off the field.

“Sometimes you have the feeling with Leroy’s body language that it is all the same whether we win or lose. He has to improve his body language,” said Germany’s vice-captain Toni Kroos even as Sane was recalled to Loew’s squad for last month’s Nations League opener against newly crowned world champions France.

“He was fantastic for City last year but Pep has the same problem at the moment — he’s trying to get the best out of him so he can perform better.”

If Guardiola was looking for a reaction, he has got what he desired.

After being dropped for City’s first four Premier League games of the season, Sane scored just two minutes into his return against Fulham and has created a goal in all three of his appearances since.

That included Bernardo Silva’s consolation against Lyon as Sane came off the bench to transform a pedestrian first-half performance that has put City under pressure to bounce back this week.

“Leroy has played really good the last few games,” said Guardiola after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton in which Sane created Raheem Sterling’s opening goal.

“Our profession is so demanding, we have to do our best every single day. I want all of my players to be focused.”

Guardiola is notoriously demanding of his players’ professionalism. But having racked up titles in charge of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now City, the Catalan coach knows which players are worth persisting with.

“We never — even in this period when he didn’t play — doubted Leroy’s quality,” added Guardiola after Sane’s instant impact against Fulham.

With his club manager’s faith restored, Sane heads back to Germany with a perfect chance to show his compatriots, least of all Loew, what they were missing in a rare summer of sorrow at international level.

Real Madrid boss Lopetegui confirms Bale substituted as 'precaution'

Madrid – Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui has confirmed Gareth Bale sustained an injury to his thigh during the goalless draw with Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Bale was substituted at half-time at the Santiago Bernabeu and is now a doubt for Real’s Champions League game against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

“Gareth had discomfort in his thigh,” Lopetegui said after the match. “He came off as a precaution and we will see tomorrow what the injury is.”

Bale has scored four goals in his last seven games for Real and any absence would be a major blow.

Real face Barcelona in La Liga on October 28 after league games against Alaves and Levante, as well as another Champions League group fixture at home to Viktoria Plzen.

Mourinho confirms Pogba return but warns 'no player is bigger than the club'

Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed that Paul Pogba will return this weekend when Manchester United take on West Ham, adding that his relationship with the French midfielder is “good” after an apparent disagreement earlier this week.

He added that Manchester United’s reputation is his main concern.

“No player is bigger than the club,” Mourinho said.

The pair had what appeared to be a heated confrontation during Wednesday’s training session over an apparent video that Pogba posted on his Instagram account, leading to speculation about a divide between the two.

But a report suggested the incident was a miscommunication. Mourinho seemed ready to move on from the saga and confirmed on Friday that Pogba will be reinserted into the first team after missing Tuesday’s League Cup defeat to Derby County.

“I am really happy with his work this week,” he said, according to Simon Stone of BBC Sport. “He trained really well. The team needs good players. He is a good player. The team needs the personality to play. He has. He plays tomorrow.”

It’s unknown if Wednesday’s episode had anything to do with Mourinho’s decision a day before to strip Pogba of vice-captaincy duties. The Portuguese manager said the decision was made after “weeks of analyzing”.

“Paul and the other players in the squad know in detail the reason why myself and my coaching staff, we decide to do that,” he said, according to Jamie Jackson of The Guardian. “I always analyse a player as a player and when a player is captain I analyse the player by the player and the captain perspective.

“After weeks of analyzing and changing opinions with my coaching staff we made the decision Paul is just a player and not a captain.”

Mourinho shot down suggestions that the incident was disruptive and said he will not change the way he conducts himself during training when cameras are present.

“Disruptive? I think for you was amazing because you made a story, an incredible story out of 15 minutes of open training session, maybe is your fault (Karen Shotbolt, the press officer), we should have 15 minutes of training session open because what happened the other day happens many days, conversations with players I have many, many, many times,” he said, according to the Manchester Evening News.

“Was not the case but loud critic, loud instruction happens every day, coaching is about that but you make story about it, so I’m happy the rules are only 15 minutes once a month and situations like that are not going to change, there is no chance you will watch a session.”

Tottenham's Eriksen in fitness race to face Barcelona

London – Christian Eriksen faces a race to be fit for Tottenham’s Champions League clash with Barcelona after the Denmark star was ruled out of Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield.

Eriksen will miss the Premier League match at the John Smith’s Stadium after suffering an abdomen injury in Tottenham’s win at Brighton last weekend.

But Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said his influential playmaker still has a chance to be ready for the visit of Spanish champions Barcelona in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday.

Tottenham desperately need to beat Barcelona after losing their opening group match at Inter Milan.

“After the game against Brighton he started to feel a small problem in his abdominal,” Pochettino told reporters on Thursday.

“I think it’s a small thing. I hope for next week he will be available again. For Barcelona? I hope yes.”

Pochettino will also assess the fitness of captain Hugo Lloris, who has not played since injuring his thigh at Manchester United.

France goalkeeper Lloris was recently banned from driving for 20 months after being found guilty of a drink-driving offence in London.

“We need to assess him tomorrow. He’s doing very well,” Pochettino added.

“The decision will be on Friday if he will be available to play against Huddersfield.

“If not we’re going to wait until Wednesday. It depends on tomorrow.”
