Tel scores off the bench to help Bayern avoid upset in Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Bayern Munich needed a late goal from Mathys Tel to continue its winning streak in Champions League group-stage games with a 2-1 win at Copenhagen on Tuesday.

With the score at 1-1, youth and experience combined for the winning goal as 34-year-old Thomas Müller picked up a pass from Harry Kane, held off two defenders and then played in 18-year-old French forward Tel to blast the ball into the net in the 83rd minute.

It was a rare moment of cohesive, creative team play from Bayern after the German champion spent most of the game frustrated by Copenhagen’s deep, compact defense and was vulnerable to the Danish team’s counterattacks.

Tel’s goal extended Bayern’s remarkable run of wins in Champions League group-stage games to 15 since a draw with Atletico Madrid in 2020, a competition record. Bayern is also 36 games unbeaten in the group stage since 2017.

Lukas Lerager opened the scoring for Copenhagen in the 56th but Jamal Musiala responded for Bayern 11 minutes later.

Bayern nearly threw the win away in added time but goalkeeper Sven Ulreich dived to keep out what would have been an own goal.

Morocco, Portugal, Spain to host 2030 World Cup, 3 games in South America

Morocco, Portugal, and Spain won a joint bid to host the 2030 men’s World Cup on Wednesday, with governing body FIFA awarding three of the tournament’s opening games to Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay to commemorate the 100th anniversary of soccer’s most prestigious event.

It’ll be the first World Cup hosted on multiple continents.

All six countries will automatically qualify for the 2030 edition, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said the first of the three matches in South America will take place in Montevideo’s Estadio Centenario, which hosted the majority of the matches during the first-ever World Cup in 1930.

Uruguay won the inaugural World Cup, beating Argentina 4-2 in the final.

Paraguay is home to CONMEBOL’s headquarters. Founded in 1916, it’s the oldest continental soccer association in the world.

“We aimed high and dreamed big. The 2030 Centenario World Cup starts where it all began,” CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

After hosting their opening matches, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will play the remainder of their games in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, according to Ornstein.

Morocco will become the first North African country to host World Cup matches and just the second from the continent after South Africa in 2010.

Spain last hosted the World Cup in 1982, which Italy won after beating West Germany in the final.

Portugal has never hosted a World Cup match before. The country reached the final of Euro 2004 as host nation before losing to Greece.

The 2030 World Cup will build on the momentum of the 2026 tournament, which will be played across 16 cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The 2026 edition will be the first to have 48 teams, up from the 32 that have contested each of the last six World Cups.

Red-hot Morata scores twice, Atletico battle back to beat Feyenoord

Alvaro Morata hit a brace as Atletico Madrid twice came from behind to beat Feyenoord 3-2 and move top of Champions League Group E on Wednesday.

Spanish striker Morata has excelled this season, becoming a key figure for Diego Simeone’s side in attack, alongside Antoine Griezmann, who netted Atletico’s other goal.

The Rojiblancos were inconsistent but moments of quality from Morata and Griezmann proved the difference in an end-to-end clash at the Metropolitano.

Atletico, knocked out in the group stage last year, were left with a familiar sinking feeling at the end of their opening group game at Lazio after the opposition goalkeeper headed home in unlikely fashion to deny them victory at the death.

That disappointment increased the pressure on them to beat Feyenoord at home and take control of the group, with any other result likely to cause them big problems down the line.

Simeone was without several players because of injury but acknowledged beforehand what mattered was only the result, regardless of who was fit or not.

Feyenoord started brightly and took the lead after just seven minutes when Ayase Ueda’s shot, saved by Jan Oblak, ricocheted in off Atletico defender Mario Hermoso, who was sliding in to stop the initial effort.

Japan international Ueda was starting in the stead of Feyenoord’s suspended top scorer Santiago Gimenez.

Morata pulled Atletico back level with a smart finish at the near post after Feyenoord defender Mats Wieffer diverted the ball into his path and away from the offside Saul Niguez.

The visitors again took the lead in the 34th minute when David Hanko blasted home from close range after his first attempt from Calvin Stengs’ crossed free-kick was saved by Oblak.

However, Atletico hit back through Griezmann with an acrobatic effort hooked over his own head to level the game at the break.

At the weekend, Atletico came from two goals down in La Liga to beat Cadiz 3-2, and they nosed ahead of Feyenoord by that scoreline early in the second half.

Morata sent them in front when he poked home from Nahuel Molina’s inviting cross from the right flank, his seventh goal in all competitions this season.

Feyenoord came close to an equalizer when Igor Peixao sent an effort narrowly wide, leaving Oblak scrambling as the game opened up, but the hosts held on to triumph.
