Rapinoe: Women award nominations show 'FIFA doesn't really care'

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Megan Rapinoe says the nomination of 18-year-old Deyna Castellanos for The Best FIFA Player award demonstrates the lack of interest from FIFA in the women’s game.

The Venezuelan teenager is yet to represent her country at either senior or Under-20 levels, and was controversially selected ahead of Australian forward Sam Kerr and Euro 2017 top scorer Jodie Taylor on this year’s shortlist.

It appears unlikely Castellanos will collect the award at the expense of fellow nominees Lieke Martens and Carli Lloyd, but her naming alone irked Rapinoe, a veteran of the United States women’s national team.

“The award just doesn’t hold a lot of weight when you’ve got someone on the list I’ve never heard of,” Rapinoe, 32, told BBC Sport’s Mani Djazmi.

She added: “It signals to us and it signals to the rest of the world that FIFA doesn’t really care.”

FIFA claims the award nominees are selected with guidance from national team coaches and captains, media representatives, and fans, so Castellanos’ selection among the potential winners is entirely legitimate. However, football’s world governing body vowed to look into the complaints over her inclusion when considering potential changes to the 2018 edition of The Best FIFA Football Awards.

That response isn’t good enough for Rapinoe.

“If some random male player, who was not even a full professional, was nominated, I’m sure they would step in for that, so it’s disappointing that the same hasn’t been done for us,” she said.

Kerr, the overlooked all-time leading scorer in the United States’ National Women’s Soccer League, also voiced an opinion on her omission, saying: “Not surprised really, it’s FIFA.”

Roma charged with racist behaviour after monkey chants at Chelsea

AS Roma is in trouble after monkey chants echoed around Stamford Bridge.

On Friday, disciplinary proceedings were opened following the game between Chelsea and Roma in the Champions League group stage, as the Giallorossi were charged with racist behaviour involving monkey chants.

According the Press Association, the monkey chants were directed at Antonio Rudiger, who played 13 minutes and previously represented Roma for two seasons. UEFA was reportedly made aware of the alleged chants on social media, and while Chelsea didn’t report them, the Blues are willing to assist if required. The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body on Nov. 16.

In March, Rudiger, still with Roma, was racially abused by SS Lazio’s supporters in the first leg of a tie between the two clubs in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. The German centre-back subsequently demanded a response from FIFA and told Sport Bild: “I take this very seriously because I cannot and must not ignore something like this. I am part of this too. Racism is a serious issue here.

“Incidents like the ones with (Medhi) Benatia and me simply happen too often in this country and this is why something must happen now. When the Italian FA is not doing anything then FIFA must act. It is easy to come up with the ‘No to Racism’ campaign but when you don’t do anything concrete then that does not help.”

Chelsea and Roma played out a 3-3 draw on Wednesday as Eden Hazard and Edin Dzeko each scored two goals.

Mbappe, Dembele, Jesus named finalists for Golden Boy award

The 25-man shortlist for the 2017 Golden Boy award has been whittled down to a final three of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Gabriel Jesus.

Prominent names such as AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Manchester United’s speedy teenager Marcus Rashford, and Borussia Dortmund’s precocious talent Christian Pulisic failed to make the cut.

Mbappe, Paris Saint-Germain’s explosive teenager, is a clear favourite to collect the Golden Boy gong. The French forward burst onto the scene last season for AS Monaco, inspiring the principality outfit to the Ligue 1 title and a run to the Champions League semi-fina. He’s now honing a potent partnership with Neymar and Edinson Cavani in PSG’s frontline.

Dembele, who signed for Barcelona in the summer after establishing himself as Dortmund’s standout man in the 2016-17 term, will also vie for the prize with Manchester City marksman Jesus.

Previous winners include Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, and Isco. Renato Sanches picked up the prize last year, and is now on loan at Swansea City from parent club Bayern Munich.

Kane delighted to swap shirts with 'role model' Ronaldo

Harry Kane isn’t sure what Cristiano Ronaldo will do with his souvenir after the pair swapped shirts, but the Tottenham striker already has plans for the No. 7 Real Madrid top he received.

“It’s a nice shirt to get and frame,” Kane told reporters after Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, according to Matt Barlow of the Daily Mail.

Kane, who was front and centre when Raphael Varane scored an own goal before Ronaldo brought the match level, was full of praise for the Portuguese star, whom he idolised as a youngster.

“I asked for his shirt,” he said. “He’s a big role model of mine, watching him when I was growing up.”

He added: “I gave him my shirt. I don’t know what he’ll do with it. We just said, ‘See you in a couple of weeks.'”
