The round of 16 for this season’s Champions League is locked in.

Monday’s draw produced some intriguing matchups, highlighted by Inter Milan, defeated finalists in 2022-23, paired with Atletico Madrid. The other standout fixture of the round also features a clash between Italian and Spanish sides, as Napoli will take on Barcelona.

On the whole, Serie A clubs were arguably handed the most difficult task of any domestic league, as Lazio will battle Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, holders Manchester City will try to accomplish what their rivals Manchester United could not by eliminating FC Copenhagen. The Danish club finished second in Group A thanks largely to a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Red Devils in November.

Elsewhere, Real Sociedad’s reward for pipping Inter to top spot in Group D is a date with Paris Saint-Germain, a club Luis Enrique said “no team” will want to face in the last 16.

Clubs from the same domestic league aren’t eligible to face one another at this stage. That restriction is lifted beginning in the quarterfinals.

The round of 16 kicks off on Feb. 13 and concludes with decisive second-leg fixtures in mid-March. The seeded teams, listed second in their respective matchups above, will play the first legs away from home.

The entire knockout phase will again be played without the away goals rule, which UEFA abolished in 2021. Any tie that’s level after 180 minutes will go to extra time and then possibly penalties.

This season’s Champions League final will be held at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium on June 1.

Paris Saint-Germain narrowly avoided another headline-grabbing setback in the Champions League on Wednesday, doing just enough to advance to the knockout stage with a 1-1 draw at Borussia Dortmund.

Despite coming back to beat Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James’ Park, AC Milan were eliminated on goal difference.

Milan received the consolation prize of Europa League football, while Newcastle bowed out of Europe.

PSG were playing not only to progress but to win the group and missed several chances early on. Dortmund’s Niklas Sule denied Kylian Mbappe with an acrobatic goal-line clearance in the 17th minute, Bradley Barcola struck the upright shortly after, and Randal Kolo Muani steered an incredible chance inches wide of the far post after barrelling down on goal.

PSG suffered an almighty scare when Karim Adeyemi gave Dortmund the lead in the 51st minute, a development cheered by the fans in Newcastle as the Magpies cradled a 1-0 lead over Milan.

Newcastle needed to win Wednesday and hope PSG didn’t, and Joelinton’s first-half screamer had put the Premier League side on the right path. Even when Warren Zaire-Emery scored the equalizer for PSG, Newcastle were still in a position to advance.

But their hopes began to fade when Christian Pulisic tied things up on Tyneside. Milan, who hit the post twice in the second half, completed the comeback when substitute Samuel Chukwueze curled in the winner in the 84th minute. That at least bought the seven-time European champions a ticket to the second-tier Europa League, one of the only competitions they’ve never won.

Somewhat surprisingly, Dortmund finished atop the group of death despite opening with a loss to PSG and a goalless draw with Milan.

Newcastle enjoyed a brief lead in their Champions League clash with AC Milan on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough in the end.

Needing a victory to keep their hopes of advancing out of Group F alive, Joelinton gave the hosts a deserved advantage with a powerful shot into the top corner of Milan’s net.

But the evening soured for the hosts, as Newcastle’s lead evaporated in the second half after Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze scored for Milan, dooming the Magpies to last place in Group F.

Milan’s triumph, however, was only good enough to earn the Italian club a spot in the Europa League.
