Liverpool agree to sign World Cup star Gakpo from PSV for reported £37M

Liverpool, seemingly out of nowhere, reached an agreement with PSV Eindhoven to sign Cody Gakpo, the Dutch side announced Monday.

The Premier League club will pay an initial £37-million fee for the versatile attacker, plus £13 million in add-ons, reports transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

PSV didn’t reveal the terms of the transfer, but general manager Marcel Brands said it was a “record” sale for the Eredivisie outfit. The club’s previous record departure was Hirving Lozano’s 2019 move to Napoli, which was reportedly worth around £39 million.

Gakpo, 23, will travel to England imminently to undergo a medical and finalize his move to Anfield.

He’s fresh off an impressive showing at the World Cup in Qatar, where he led the Netherlands to the quarterfinals by scoring three goals in five matches. Between club and country, Gakpo has been directly involved in 35 goals this season; he leads the Eredivisie with nine tallies on the campaign despite playing primarily on the left wing.

Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp were looking to bolster their attacking options in the wake of injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

The Dutch forward was heavily linked with Manchester United in recent months. However, the Red Devils never submitted an official offer to PSV, according to Romano.

Leeds United nearly signed Gakpo on the final day of the summer transfer window but couldn’t close the deal, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic. His stock has since soared, culminating with the switch to Liverpool.

Broncos fire Hackett following 4-11 start to year

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos fired first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett on Monday.

The move comes after a 4-11 start and Sunday’s 51-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Hackett’s dismissal puts an abrupt end to the shortest tenure of any noninterim head coach in franchise history. The Broncos’ new ownership — the Walton-Penner Group, led by Walmart heir Rob Walton, his daughter Carrie Walton Penner and son-in-law Greg Penner — quickly ran out of patience for a team with one of the league’s best defenses with an offense that simply could not score.

“Following extensive conversations with [general manager] George [Paton] and our ownership group, we determined a new direction would ultimately be in the best interest of the Broncos,” Greg Penner said in a statement. “This change was made now out of respect for everyone involved and allows us to immediately begin the search for a new head coach.

“Moving forward, we will carefully evaluate every aspect of our football operations and make whatever changes are necessary to restore this franchise’s winning tradition,” Penner said, adding that Paton will assist in the coaching search. No interim coach has been named.

The team has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday at noon ET.

At one point this season, the Broncos featured the No. 1 scoring defense and the No. 32 scoring offense. The Broncos also missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year, the longest playoff drought since the franchise’s earliest years when it missed the playoffs between 1960 and 1976.

It’s a far cry from Hall of Famer Pat Bowlen’s three-decade run as owner, when the Broncos went to more Super Bowls (seven) than they had losing seasons. This season is also the fifth time the Broncos have averaged fewer than 20 points per game over the past seven years. Until Hackett’s firing, Wade Phillips had the shortest tenure as the team’s noninterim head coach in the post-AFL-NFL merger era — two seasons (1993-1994) — before he was fired by Bowlen and Mike Shanahan was hired.

Hackett, 42, was hired in January as the franchise’s 18th head coach after serving three seasons as the Green Bay Packers’ offensive coordinator under Matt LaFleur. At the time, Paton called Hackett a “dynamic leader and coach whose intelligence, innovation and charisma impressed us from the very start of the process.”

Then-Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell and Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn were also finalists for the role. O’Connell was later hired by the Minnesota Vikings, whose resurgent offense has led them to a 12-3 start. Shortly after Hackett’s hire, the Broncos traded five draft picks, including two first-rounders and two second-rounders, as well as three players to the Seattle Seahawks to acquire quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson was signed to a five-year, $245 million contract extension just before the start of the season.

But the excitement of the Broncos’ offseason quickly fizzled out as Hackett’s in-game decision-making was questioned right from the start of the season.

Report: Messi to extend PSG contract until 2024

Lionel Messi will play at least one more season in France.

Fresh off winning the World Cup with Argentina, the 35-year-old is expected to sign a contract extension that will keep him at Paris Saint-Germain until June 2024, Julien Laurens of ESPN reports.

Negotiations have yet to begin, but it’s understood that Messi, whose current deal is set to expire next summer, has informally agreed to extend his stay.

PSG officials held positive talks with Messi’s father, Jorge, before the World Cup to gauge the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s interest in staying, according to Laurens. PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos reportedly plan to meet with the star in January when his break after winning the World Cup ends.

Messi has previously been linked with a move back to Barcelona after his PSG contract runs out. However, he hasn’t been in touch with Barcelona president Joan Laporta since leaving in 2021, per Lauren.

A deal to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami has previously been reported, but it appears that no such move is currently being discussed.

Messi scored 12 goals for PSG in 19 appearances in all competitions before the World Cup.

Messi finally wins World Cup as Argentina dethrones France in epic final

Lionel Messi is a World Cup champion.

The 35-year-old had to do it the hard way, but Messi added the coveted trophy to his collection after Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties in the 2022 World Cup final.

After 120 minutes of thrilling action ended 3-3, Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni missed in the shootout before Gonzalo Montiel’s penalty sealed Argentina’s first World Cup title since 1986.

The decisive penalty sparked wild celebrations at Lusail Stadium and capped what may go down as the most exciting World Cup final ever.

Messi ended the World Cup with seven goals and won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player for the second time in his career. Messi – who became the first player to record goals in every round at a 32-team World Cup – also claimed the honor in 2014 after Argentina lost to Germany in the final.

“Obviously I wanted to finish my career with this. I can’t ask for any more,” Messi told Argentine television after the emotional win. “I want to keep experiencing a few more matches as world champion,” he added.

Kylian Mbappe, meanwhile, won the Golden Boot award as the World Cup’s highest scorer with eight goals.

It was a bittersweet night for Mbappe, as the 23-year-old became the second player to record a hat-trick in a World Cup final. But unlike Geoffrey Hurst’s for England in 1966, Mbappe’s hat-trick came in a losing effort.

“I don’t want to take any merit away from Argentina but there are lots and lots of emotions and it was cruel at the end because we were so close,” said France coach Didier Deschamps.

With Argentina up 2-0 in the 79th minute after goals from Messi and Angel Di Maria, the Paris Saint-Germain sensation scored twice in two minutes to bring the reigning World Cup holder level and send the game to extra time.

Messi and Mbappe traded goals in extra time before penalties decided the contest. Coman had his effort saved by Emiliano Martinez, who was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper, while Tchouameni’s strike went wide.

Messi casually converted his penalty before celebrating with his teammates, lifting football’s biggest prize in the last World Cup of his glittering career.

Argentina has now won the World Cup three times, while two-time winner France fell short in its quest to become the first team since 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.
