Payton laments FG block try that led to penalty

  • Jeff LegwoldSep 15, 2025, 01:44 PM ET

Jeff Legwold covers the Denver Broncos at ESPN. He has covered the Broncos for more than 20 years and also assists with NFL draft coverage, joining ESPN in 2013. He has been a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Selectors since 1999, too. Jeff previously covered the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills and Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans at previous stops prior to ESPN.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton said Monday morning the game officials made “the correct call” on a Denver penalty during a 60-yard field goal attempt Sunday, a penalty that gave the Indianapolis Colts a second chance at the game winner on the last play of a 29-28 Broncos loss.

Broncos outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman was flagged for leverage on the 60-yard attempt with three seconds left in regulation and the Broncos clinging to a 28-26 lead. The kick was short, but Tillman put his left hand on the player lined up at right guard on the kick — Dalton Tucker — and leaped to try to block the kick.

Payton said it was a mistake to have a field goal block call for such a long attempt and that the Broncos had also lined up improperly on the play.

“We had a certain field goal block [in the game plan] in the event of a game-ending field goal,” Payton said Monday. ” … But that’s on me in that situation. It’s not on [special teams coach] Darren [Rizzi], it’s not on Tillman. A 60-yard field goal attempt is different … The alignment got wrong and the [officials’] call was correct … My big regret flying home was, you know … that [block attempt] is more for a gimme than a 60-yard attempt. And that’s on me.”

Payton said the Broncos had actually planned, if they wanted to try to block a kick, their intention was to rush at the player the Colts had at left guard on kicks — defensive tackle Editor’s Picks

But on the 60-yard attempt, just before the snap, Tillman and Broncos defensive tackle Eyioma Uwazurike flipped spots and instead of Tillman being across from Stewart, he was now across from Tucker. Tillman was flagged and after the 15-yard penalty, Shrader made the 45-yard attempt on an untimed down to end the game.

“The idea was to work 90 … who lined up at left guard … and then right at the last minute [Uwazurike and Tillman] flipped on it on the inside and now we’re on a different defender,” Payton said. “We end up on the wrong side … But before any of that we should be looking at a normal rush, a normal interior rush.”

Payton said Tillman’s penalty was just one of several issues for the Broncos in Sunday’s fourth quarter. The Broncos led 28-23 when the fourth quarter began, but quarterback Bo Nix threw a red zone interception, the Broncos had three penalties in the quarter, including two 15-yarders, and Wil Lutz also missed a 42-yard field goal, a miss that led to the Colts’ game-winning drive.

Sources: Burrow could need surgery for turf toe

Sep 14, 2025, 09:08 PM ET

Star Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is dealing with a turf toe injury that could require surgery, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday night.

Images of the injury to Burrow’s left toe, which he suffered in the second quarter of Sunday’s 31-27 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, are being sent to noted foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson to be reviewed, sources told Schefter.

If surgery is deemed necessary, it is expected to sideline Burrow for approximately three months.

Burrow was hurt with 8:36 remaining in the second quarter when Jacksonville defensive end Arik Armstead sacked him. The play resulted in Burrow being under other players who had fallen on him.

Initially, Burrow was limping as he tried to walk off the field. But after a couple of steps, he went down on the turf. Burrow had a lengthy evaluation in the blue injury tent. After several minutes, he attempted to walk back into the locker room. However, Burrow stopped roughly 15 feet short of the tunnel that leads beneath the stadium as he sought assistance from athletic trainers to make it back inside.

Burrow was initially listed as questionable to return before he was ruled out. He never returned to the field and was in a walking boot and on crutches after the game.

Coach Zac Taylor did not have any additional information on the QB’s status.

In his place, backup Jake Browning led the Bengals to a comeback victory, capped by his 1-yard leap over the goal line with 18 seconds left.

Falcons bench kicker Koo after missed FG vs. Bucs

He also covered professional wrestling and wrote the book “Say Hello to the Bad Guys: How Pro Wrestling’s New World Order Changed America,” which was published by Simon & Schuster in 2025. Raimondi also worked for the New York Post and Newsday, beginning in 2009, covering high school and college sports, plus the NFL, NFL, MLB and NHL.

The Atlanta Falcons have benched their longtime kicker. The team announced Saturday that kicker Younghoe Koo has been downgraded to out for Sunday night’s game at the Minnesota Vikings.

In his place, Parker Romo has been elevated from the practice squad. The Falcons signed Romo, a Georgia native who kicked for the Minnesota Vikings last season, on Tuesday.

Koo missed a 44-yard field goal in the closing seconds last week that would have tied the Falcons’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 23. Koo made 2 of 3 field goals against the Bucs, but one caromed off the right upright. Koo being ruled out is not injury related.

Koo, who missed time last season because of a hip injury, is just 12-of-20 on field goals over his past nine games. Koo, 31, missed nine field goals last year, making just 73.5%, his worst percentage since becoming a full-time kicker with Atlanta in 2019.

Koo was once the most accurate kicker in the league, but now, among kickers with 20 or more field goal attempts since the start of 2024, Koo ranks No. 29 out of 31 in field goal percentage (73%). Romo, 28, was 11-of-12 on field goals last year in four games for Minnesota, his first opportunity to kick in the NFL.

Romo spent training camp with the New England Patriots, but was released on cut-down day. In 2023, he led the XFL in field goal percentage (17-of-19, 89.5%).

Hill: Focus is on football not abuse allegations

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Speaking publicly Friday afternoon for the first time since his ex-wife alleged domestic abuse during their marriage, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill declined to comment on his divorce case.

However, Hill said he’s focused more on his job than on any outside distractions, including his divorce hearings and trade rumors surrounding him.

“My focus right now is just playing ball, and spending time with my kids and just doing what I’m best at: providing for my family,” the wide receiver said. “So all the noise, I feel like if you allow that kind of stuff to get in the way of what you’re trying to do, it can only cloud what you’re really trying to get accomplished.”

Hill’s estranged wife, Keeta Vaccaro, alleged eight separate incidents of domestic violence in filings related to the couple’s divorce case, according to documents obtained by TMZ. Hill vehemently denied the claims in a statement released by his lawyer Monday.

NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy and Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel confirmed the NFL is investigating the matter, which McCarthy said is “standard policy” in situations like this. Hill said he has not spoken to the league as of Friday afternoon.

Hill and the Dolphins caught leaguewide attention following their 33-8 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, in which he led the team with four catches for 40 yards. Team captains called for a players-only meeting Tuesday, Miami’s off day, in order to hold each other accountable and remain on the same page as the Dolphins prepare to host the New England Patriots in Week 2.

While he was not voted a captain this season, Hill said he fully supported the meeting and believes it will help the team in the long run.

“The standard is the standard each and every day,” he said. “Holding guys accountable … I think the biggest thing is accountability. You know what I’m saying? Guys got to be able to receive it in a certain way and not feel attacked. So I feel like if we approach it that way, we’re going to be fine. Man, we got a real good shot at winning this week. I feel like the guys attacked the practice field the right way and we got better. So I think it was a beautiful thing.”

Hill insisted he is happy in Miami amid trade rumors, although he accepts that “whatever happens, happens” in the NFL.

“I don’t really pay attention to any of that,” he said. “I feel like to me, noise is good — adversity is opportunity. I look at it like that.”
