Salah wants to face Real Madrid in Champions League final after 2018 pain

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah prefers to play Real Madrid in the Champions League final rather than face Premier League rivals Manchester City.

The Egyptian attacker helped end Villarreal’s hopes of a comeback in Tuesday’s semifinal, setting up Fabinho’s goal in a 3-2 win at Estadio de la Ceramica. Following the second-leg victory, Liverpool advanced with a 5-2 aggregate scoreline.

City currently hold a 4-3 advantage over Real Madrid in the other semifinal. The teams meet at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday to decide who takes on Liverpool at the Stade de France on May 28.

“I want to play Madrid. I have to be honest,” Salah told BT Sport after Liverpool reached the final. “City’s a really tough team, we played against them a few times this season, but I think, if you ask me personally, I would prefer Madrid.”

Liverpool and Salah have painful memories from meeting Real Madrid in the 2018 final. A tearful Salah was withdrawn in the 31st minute after dislocating his shoulder in a contentious challenge with Sergio Ramos. Liverpool went on to lose 3-1 to the Gareth Bale-inspired Blancos in Kyiv.

“Hopefully, we’ll win it from them as well,” Salah said of the potential rematch.

The Reds are still competing for four major honors this season. After hoisting the League Cup in February, Liverpool have incredibly kept their other pursuits for silverware alive as they prepare for finals in the Champions League and FA Cup. They also sit just one point behind Manchester City in the Premier League table.

“Yeah, for sure,” Salah replied when asked if his main target for the team was to win the quadruple. “Maybe not in the beginning of the season because, I’m always honest, I always focus on the Champions League and Premier League, but now we are close for everything, so why not?”

Watch: Rodrygo's dramatic late heroics kept Real Madrid alive

Real Madrid mounted a dramatic late comeback to force extra time after drawing level with Manchester City 5-5 on aggregate in Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal.

Rodrygo rescued the hosts after scoring twice in the dying minutes to stave off elimination at the Santiago Bernabeu. His second goal, a pinpoint header, came in the 91st minute to cap an incredible sequence.

Once they got to extra time, Karim Benzema slotted home a penalty in the 95th minute that stood up as the decisive goal, as Madrid reached the Champions League final with a stunning 6-5 aggregate triumph.

Jaguars got Trevor Lawrence some help

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 2022 NFL draft was barely a week ago, but it’s already obvious that the Jacksonville Jaguars’ focus in the 2023 offseason will be getting quarterback Trevor Lawrence more help.

The Jaguars did that in free agency by signing two receivers and a tight end, but after going defense with five of their seven draft picks and selecting only one skill-position player (a fifth-round running back), offense will be their top priority next year.

“I think the free-agent period allowed us some freedom to look at the draft a little differently than we might have pre-free agency, if that makes sense,” general manager Trent Baalke said. “Again, dealing with [Head] Coach [Doug Pederson] and going through the process with the coaching staff, it’s all about developing the best roster, the best 53. That’s how we approached free agency, that’s how we approached the draft.

By the numbers: Stats behind Real Madrid's latest incredible escape

They did it again.

Real Madrid, for the umpteenth time, conjured up something special to come back from the brink of Champions League elimination, this time scoring twice in the waning seconds of Wednesday’s semifinal against Manchester City to force extra time. Karim Benzema – who else? – took care of the rest to lift Madrid to another incomprehensible win and into the final.

Below, we look at some of the incredible stats behind the Spanish giants’ latest improbable triumph.

0 – Prior to Rodrygo’s first goal of the night, Real Madrid didn’t have a shot on target.

1 – Pep Guardiola had only lost one of nine games as a coach at the Santiago Bernabeu before Wednesday’s gut-wrenching defeat.

5 – Carlo Ancelotti, who this past weekend became the first manager to ever win a title in each of Europe’s top five leagues, is now the first tactician to reach the Champions League final five times.

10 – Benzema has 10 goals in the Champions League knockout stage this season – nobody has ever scored more. The Frenchman is level with former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who hit the same mark during the 2016-17 season.

60 – In leaving Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale, and Isco out of the squad, Real Madrid had roughly €60 million in annual salary not even on the bench. Assuming they shed those contracts and reinvest, the Champions League finalists are going to get even better. Scary.

90 – Since Guardiola took over, this was the first time Manchester City had ever conceded multiple goals in the 90th minute or later.

178 – Real Madrid trailed for 178 minutes of the semifinal tie. They still won.

322 – Benzema has now scored 322 goals for Real Madrid. With two more, he’ll surpass club icon Raul for second-most all time, behind only Ronaldo.
