Report: Inter Miami increasingly confident of signing Messi

Inter Miami are growing increasingly confident they’ll sign Lionel Messi ahead of the 2023 Major League Soccer season, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic.

David Beckham’s MLS franchise is so optimistic, in fact, that club officials now “expect” Messi to arrive and are hopeful a contract will be sealed in the coming months, Ornstein adds.

Messi, 35, is scheduled to become a free agent next summer when his current deal with Paris Saint-Germain expires. If he doesn’t agree to an extension by the end of the calendar year, he’ll be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with any club of his choosing beginning in January.

PSG are reportedly working to prolong the Argentine icon’s stay, while a return to former club Barcelona has also been touted. But Inter Miami’s proposal is the most advanced, according to Ornstein, with the two parties having been in discussions over a move for “a couple of years.”

Though Beckham and the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner have a good relationship, negotiations are being led by Jorge and Jose Mas, the brothers who co-own Inter Miami alongside the former England star. They’ve held “numerous” meetings with Messi’s father, Jorge, Ornstein notes.

For now, conversations between the sides will be halted until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Messi will make his final appearance at the tournament with Argentina.

Inter Miami believe Messi and his family, who already own property in the city that boasts strong community ties to Latin America, will be persuaded to make the move by a variety of factors.

Messi, who’d instantly become the most high-profile acquisition in MLS history, would be the face of the league, and soccer in the United States, just as the country is gearing up to co-host the 2026 World Cup. On the pitch, Inter Miami are growing in stature, too. They reached the MLS playoffs for the first time this season and are working to build a squad capable of long-term success.

And, perhaps most importantly, the club continues to push forward with plans to construct Miami Freedom Park, the $1-billion complex that will eventually house Inter Miami’s new 25,000-seat stadium.

Messi, who appears rejuvenated after a slow start to his PSG tenure, is back to his best this season. In 16 matches between Ligue 1 and the Champions League, the veteran superstar has recorded 11 goals and 13 assists.

Watch: Atletico eliminated after crazy penalty sequence in 99th minute

Atletico Madrid will need to battle for the consolation prize of a Europa League place following Wednesday’s 2-2 home draw against Bayer Leverkusen.

But they were so close to keeping their Champions League dream alive.

Los Colchoneros received a lifeline when they were dramatically awarded a penalty after the final whistle for a handball. However, Lukas Hradecky saved Yannick Carrasco’s 99th-minute spot-kick, Saul Niguez headed the deflection onto the crossbar, and Reinildo’s follow-up was inadvertently blocked on the line by a disoriented Carrasco.

The result confirmed FC Porto’s progression to the Champions League knockout rounds.

Barcelona suffer early Champions League exit for 2nd straight season

The consequences of Barcelona’s summer gamble could be disastrous.

Months removed from an infamous spending spree, the Catalan club was officially knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday after Inter Milan secured the final knockout round spot in Group C with a 4-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen.

It’s the second consecutive season Barca have failed to reach the last 16 in the competition.

Barcelona were eliminated prior to their 3-0 loss against Bayern Munich later in the day.

Defeats earlier in the tournament against Bayern and Inter ultimately proved too much for Xavi Hernandez’s side to overcome. A chaotic 3-3 draw with Inter on Matchday 4 meant Barca needed maximum points from their final two games and results elsewhere to go in their favor.

The odds were too much of a hurdle in the end, with Inter living up to the billing as favorites heading into Wednesday’s meeting with Plzen. Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Edin Dzeko, and the returning Romelu Lukaku fuelled the Italian side to victory and sealed a place in the Champions League last 16.

Getting knocked out of the group stage was among the worst possible outcomes for the Catalan giants, who made heavy investments in the summer despite reporting massive amounts of debt.

Barcelona’s premature exit would’ve been viewed as a disaster among club officials and supporters alike under normal circumstances. But this season, the stakes were far higher for a club that seemingly depended on the Champions League campaign to help restore former glories.

The Blaugrana surprised many this past summer, dishing out hundreds of millions on new signings. Barca made blockbuster deals after club president Joan Laporta’s financial maneuvering. The Spanish side generated some funds through player departures, but a majority of the money raised this year came from selling television rights and merchandising licenses.

However, the arrival of star players such as Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Jules Kounde couldn’t help avoid another group-stage exit, meaning Barca will now have to shift their attention to the Europa League.

Watch: Spurs' UCL progress on hold after Kane's 95th-minute goal ruled offside

Harry Kane thought he had fired Tottenham Hotspur into the Champions League round of 16. The video assistant referee had other ideas.

Tottenham’s wild celebrations quickly turned to protests when the official ruled Kane’s 95th-minute goal offside Wednesday against Sporting CP. The decision forced the hosts to settle for a 1-1 draw with their Portuguese counterparts and leaves every team in Group D with a chance of progressing to the knockout round next week.

Replays showed that Kane had strayed into an offside position when teammate Emerson Royal headed the ball into the 6-yard box for the English striker to smash home. Though the pass took a deflection off of Sporting substitute Flavio Nazinho, it wasn’t a deliberate play, meaning Kane remained offside regardless of the touch it had taken.

Spurs manager Antonio Conte was sent off shortly after match official Danny Makkelie confirmed the call.

Conte argued the goal should’ve stood because the ball was ahead of Kane and played back to him. ESPN correspondent Dale Johnson, who tracks VAR decisions on a regular basis, wrote on Twitter that the direction of the ball is irrelevant.

“VAR is creating a lot of (damage),” Conte told BT Sport. “I want to see if we stay in another stadium or another big team if they are ready to disallow this type of goal.”

Rodrigo Bentancur headed in the equalizer in the 80th minute to set up a grandstand finish.

Even with the draw, Conte’s side leads Group D with eight points. Sporting and Eintracht Frankfurt are second on seven points apiece, while Marseille sit on six.
