Ronaldo dropped from United's squad vs. Chelsea after refusing to play

Manchester United won’t feature Cristiano Ronaldo in their next game, the club announced a day after the disgruntled Portuguese star left the bench early during a Premier League match.

“Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of the Manchester United squad for this Saturday’s Premier League game against Chelsea,” read a statement from the Premier League club Thursday. “The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that fixture.”

The 37-year-old said in a statement that he had acted in the heat of the moment and that he’d remain committed to the club.

“Right now, I just feel that I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates, and be ready for everything in any given game,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. “Giving in to the pressure is not an option. It never was. This is Manchester United, and united we must stand. Soon we’ll be together again.”

After Ronaldo controversially walked off the pitch early against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, manager Erik ten Hag revealed the Portuguese star refused to come on as a substitute during the 2-0 victory.

Ronaldo then had to train alone Thursday before Ten Hag reportedly decided to drop him ahead of Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

Along with refusing to play, it’s understood that Ronaldo left Old Trafford before the full-time whistle confirmed an impressive win at home for United, ESPN’s Rob Dawson reports.

Ronaldo initially departed the bench in the 90th minute even though the Red Devils had two substitutions left and the game had four minutes of injury time remaining. He then allegedly stopped by the dressing room briefly to change before leaving the stadium while his teammates were still on the pitch, Dawson adds.

Last weekend, Ronaldo made headlines for his frustrated reaction to being substituted from Sunday’s game against Newcastle United. Ten Hag said afterward that the club would tolerate similar protests from Ronaldo as long as he conducted himself in a “quiet” and “normal” manner.

Liverpool, Portugal star Jota ruled out of World Cup due to calf injury

Diogo Jota’s World Cup dream is over after the Liverpool and Portugal forward was ruled out of next month’s competition because of a calf injury.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed Tuesday that the 25-year-old’s injury is “pretty serious.”

“Not good news on Diogo. He will miss the World Cup,” Klopp said, according to Sky Sports.

When asked about a timeline, Klopp replied, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce, “It will be months, I don’t want to put a number on it.”

Klopp added that Jota, who suffered the injury in Sunday’s win over Manchester City, won’t undergo surgery.

After such a good night at Anfield mine ended in the worst way ! In the last minute one of my dreams collapsed ?
I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible ?

Jota will miss Liverpool’s next five games before the Premier League breaks for the World Cup.

Portugal’s campaign in Qatar kicks off on Nov. 24 against Ghana before matches against Uruguay and South Korea in Group H.

Neymar slams Ballon d'Or over Vinicius Jr. ranking

Neymar wasn’t a fan of Vinicius Junior’s ranking among the world’s best players at the Ballon d’Or awards.

The Paris Saint-Germain star agreed that Karim Benzema deserved to be ranked first and win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award at Monday’s ceremony, but he felt his Brazil teammate should’ve landed higher than eighth.

“… Finishing eighth is not right. At the very least, he is among the top three,” Neymar said on Twitter, as translated by ESPN’s Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens.

Agora o Vini jr estar em 8 não dá

Kevin De Bruyne and Sadio Mane finished second and third, respectively, to complete the top three behind Benzema. PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe was ranked sixth.

Meanwhile, Neymar was not named among the top 30 players in the world, according to votes collected by the French news magazine France Football. He ranked 16th last season.

Vinicius’ eighth-place ranking, however, is a massive improvement a year after he failed to crack the top 30 himself at the 2021 Ballon d’Or award ceremony.

The 22-year-old’s jump up the rankings comes in recognition of a breakout season, putting up 22 goals and 20 assists in all competitions.

Vinicius was also pivotal in helping Real Madrid capture a record 14th Champions League title, scoring the winning goal in last season’s final against Liverpool.

With Dak Prescott, what will — and won't — change for Cowboys' offense?

FRISCO, Texas — It’s an easy question without an easy answer.

What changes about the Dallas Cowboys’ offense in Dak Prescott’s return from a fractured right thumb, potentially as early as Sunday against the Detroit Lions (1 p.m. ET, CBS)?

Nothing and everything.

Nothing changes, because how the Cowboys (4-2) played in their five games with quarterback Cooper Rush starting in place of Prescott is how they designed their offense in the offseason. When the team traded wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns and did not replace him with a proven veteran or high draft pick, the plan was to be a run-first operation and play to the defensive strength of the team.

A daily sports betting news and information show (6-7 p.m. ET, ESPN2) that aims to better serve the millions of sports fans who participate in sports wagering and help educate general sports fans with in-depth analysis. Watch »

Everything changes, because Prescott can do more than Rush. Despite the calls from certain segments of the fan base or national media types wishing for drama, there was no quarterback controversy and there never was going to be. Even owner and general manager Jerry Jones’ comments that he hoped there would be a controversy were about the team winning games without Prescott.

This was not 2016, when Prescott took over for an injured Tony Romo. After losing the opener, the Cowboys won 11 straight games that season. They failed only once to score at least 24 points during that winning streak.

Under Rush, the Cowboys topped 24 points only once, scoring 25 against the Washington Commanders.

While the Cowboys did not feel handcuffed offensively with Rush as their quarterback, Prescott’s ability and experience opens up more possibilities. However, the Cowboys don’t want Prescott to feel like he’s returning as the conquering hero, needing to do everything for the team to succeed.

When Prescott has been at his best, the Cowboys have had a complementary bent, even when he threw for 4,900 yards in 2019 and set a franchise record with 37 touchdown passes last season.

“I just think Dak needs to play his game — if he goes this week,” McCarthy said.

Prescott said after last week’s loss to the
