Benzema captures 1st Ballon d'Or after career season

Karim Benzema crowned the best season of his career by winning the Ballon d’Or on Monday, becoming the first Frenchman to claim football’s top individual honor since Zinedine Zidane in 1998.

With an astounding 44 goals in 46 appearances, Benzema helped Real Madrid win La Liga by 13 points and the Champions League for a record-extending 14th time. He also re-established himself as one of France’s key players ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Benzema succeeds Lionel Messi, who won the award last season for the seventh time.

“Seeing this award in front of me makes me really proud of the work I’ve done,” Benzema told the adoring audience at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. “It was a childhood dream … I had two role models, (Zinedine) Zidane and Ronaldo, and I always had this dream in my mind that anything is possible.”

Benzema, one of the most decorated players of his generation, saved his best performances for the Champions League, scoring 15 goals, including hat-tricks against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea in back-to-back knockout ties.

The 34-year-old is just the fourth different player to win the Ballon d’Or since 2008. Teammate Luka Modric – who took home the trophy in 2018 after leading Croatia to the World Cup final – is the only other player to break Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s hold on the prestigious honor.

Ronaldo ended up in 20th – the lowest he’s ranked since 2005 – while Messi missed the shortlist altogether.

France Football’s voters – a cast including journalists from FIFA’s top 100 nations – now recognize a player’s accomplishments over the preceding European season. Previously, voters took into account each nominee’s performances over the last calendar year.

2022 Men’s Ballon d’Or rankings

Sadio Mane, who finished as runner-up in the Champions League final with Liverpool, placed second in Ballon d’Or voting. Kevin De Bruyne, a key member of Manchester City’s Premier League-winning side, came third. Robert Lewandowski, who famously missed out on the award in 2020 and 2021, finished fourth.

Benzema waited years for his moment in the spotlight. The striker joined Madrid as a promising 22-year-old from Lyon in 2009, arriving at the same time as Ronaldo, and largely played in the shadow of the Portuguese superstar in the years that followed. Benzema helped Ronaldo win the Ballon d’Or four times during their time together in the Spanish capital, serving as a provider rather than goalscorer while pulling defenders away from his teammate.

Ronaldo’s exit in 2018 allowed Benzema to take ownership of the team. With youngsters Federico Valverde, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo by his side, Benzema finally became the focal point of Madrid’s attack. His scoring record increased year after year, culminating in last season’s career haul.

Before Ronaldo left Madrid, Benzema never ranked higher than 16th in Ballon d’Or voting. On Monday, everyone expected him to win.

Watch: Atzili's rocket helps Maccabi Haifa take down Juventus

It was a humiliating night for Juventus as Group H minnows Maccabi Haifa claimed a memorable 2-0 win in Tuesday’s Champions League encounter.

Watch: Salah caps historic Champions League hat-trick with classic curler

Well, that escalated quickly.

Mohamed Salah came off the bench to make history on Wednesday, scoring the fastest hat-trick the Champions League has ever seen during Liverpool’s 7-1 rout of Rangers.

With the Reds holding a 3-1 lead in the second stanza, Jurgen Klopp turned to the Egyptian star, and he wasted no time making an impact – he needed just six minutes and twelve seconds to find the net three times.

Salah capped his whirlwind introduction to the match with a classic left-footed curler in the 81st minute.

Barcelona fight back to stave off UCL elimination in 6-goal thriller vs. Inter

Barcelona are alive and kicking in the Champions League.

Robert Lewandowski’s vital brace in the final 10 minutes of play Wednesday at Camp Nou kept Barcelona from being eliminated in the group stage of Europe’s top competition for a second season running, rounding off a breathless 3-3 draw with Inter Milan that temporarily denied the Nerazzurri a place in the knockout round.

Inter substitute Kristjan Asllani spoiled a golden opportunity to give his team the lead for good in the 98th minute when he decided to shoot straight at goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen rather than square the ball to his wide-open teammate.

Barcelona stared elimination in the face after falling behind 2-1 and 3-2 in the second half. Lewandowski made it 2-2 in the 82nd minute and canceled out Robin Gosens’ go-ahead goal in the 89th with a powerful header in the second minute of stoppage time.

Things were much more straightforward in Plzen, where Bayern Munich ran away 4-2 winners over the Czech side to maintain their perfect record in Group C and book a place in the knockout round.

Given Bayern’s record 32-match unbeaten run in the Champions League group stage and Plzen’s obvious inferiority, Barcelona and Inter were always likely to fight for second in Group C. That battle will now go down to the wire. With a three-point lead over Barcelona and the head-to-head record in their favor, Inter control their own destiny: They can clinch a berth in the round of 16 if they beat already eliminated Plzen at home on Oct. 26. Barcelona need Inter to drop points in that game and a win over Bayern on the same day to enter the final matchday with a chance of progressing.

Group C standings

W-D-L GD Pts
Bayern 4-0-0 11 12
Inter 2-1-1 1 7
Barcelona 1-1-2 1 4
Plzen 0-0-4 -13 0

After taking the lead in the 40th minute through Ousmane Dembele, the Blaugrana and the 92,000 fans in attendance watched in horror as two of their most accomplished players committed uncharacteristic errors. Gerard Pique, starting in place of the injured Andreas Christensen, failed to detect Nicolo Barella in the area in the 50th minute, signaling to his teammates that the play was safe just as the Inter midfielder darted into scoring position. Sergio Busquets then conceded possession, and Lautaro Martinez made it 2-1 from the ensuing counterattack.

One of the most dramatic finishes in recent Champions League history soon followed.
