Ballon d'Or rankings: Ronaldo falls to 6th, Haaland outside top 10

Lionel Messi edged out Robert Lewandowski to claim a record-extending seventh Ballon d’Or on Monday, ending a bittersweet year on a high after he left Barcelona and won the Copa America in the summer.

Lewandowski settled for second place despite breaking Gerd Muller’s long-standing single-season Bundesliga scoring record with 41 goals in 2020-21.

Jorginho, an early favorite for the Ballon d’Or after playing every minute of Italy’s Euro 2020-winning campaign, ranked third.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was absent from Monday’s ceremony, finished in sixth. It’s the first time he’s finished outside the top three since 2010 when he also dropped to sixth place.

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who was named the best player at Euro 2020, rounded out the top 10.

Simon Kjaer, whose life-saving measures helped Christian Eriksen recover from cardiac arrest at the summer tournament, finished in 18th place, while Pedri, who won the Kopa Trophy as the world’s best player under the age of 21, ended up in 24th.

Messi scored 38 goals in all competitions for Barcelona last season and helped the club win the Copa del Rey – its first title since the 2018-19 season – before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain. He also achieved one of his dreams in July when he lifted the Copa America, his first major triumph with Argentina’s national team.

Messi edges Lewandowski to capture record 7th Ballon d'Or

Lionel Messi captured the Ballon d’Or for a record seventh time during Monday’s ceremony in France.

The Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina star edged out Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski to win the 2021 Ballon d’Or and extend his lead over rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award five times.

“It is incredible to be here again,” Messi said, according to The Evening Standard. “Two years ago, I thought that it was my last year, and now I am here again. I am very happy, very excited, and wanting to fight for new challenges.

“I do not know how long I have left, but I hope it will be a long time. I want to thank my teammates from Barcelona and PSG, and especially the Argentina team. I won this award, and I had the feeling that I was missing something, and this year I was able to achieve it.”

Lewandowski was considered one of the top contenders to win the Ballon d’Or for the first time in his career. But his record-breaking 41 goals in the Bundesliga last season apparently weren’t enough to usurp Messi, who beat Lewandowski by 33 votes.

“It is a huge honor to fight with Robert (Lewandowski). Last year, you were the winner, and I think France Football should give it to you,” Messi said.

The 2020 edition of the event, where Lewandowski would’ve been favored to win the Ballon d’Or, was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho finished third, while Karim Benzema of Real Madrid and N’Golo Kante rounded out the top five.

Ronaldo finished sixth in voting and outside of the top five for the first time since 2010.

Messi, who attended the ceremony with his wife and children, enjoyed another incredible season at Barcelona before helping Argentina capture the Copa America last summer.

After the tournament, the 34-year-old ended his illustrious Barcelona career with a move to Paris Saint-Germain. He has four goals and three assists in 11 matches in all competitions with his new club.

Messi previously won the Ballon d’Or in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019.

Barcelona captain Putellas wins 2021 Women's Ballon d'Or

Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas won the 2021 Women’s Ballon d’Or award on Monday, capping a dominant year with another accolade.

The Spanish superstar, 27, led Barca to a treble-winning campaign last season, scoring in the 4-0 victory over Chelsea in the Champions League final. All told, she registered 26 goals in 46 matches, finishing the 2020-21 term as the highest-scoring midfielder in Europe.

She’s carried that outstanding form into the new campaign, too, delivering 14 goals in 13 appearances thus far.

Putellas, who also claimed the UEFA women’s player of the year title in August, is the first Spaniard to win the Ballon d’Or since Luis Suarez took home the men’s award in 1960.

“I’m very emotional, it’s a very special moment,” she said at Monday’s ceremony in Paris, through a translator. “I would like to start by thanking all my teammates, especially my current (Barcelona) teammates. For me, it’s a collective success.”

Putellas was one of five Barca players nominated.

Teammate and compatriot Jennifer Hermoso finished second in the voting, while Chelsea forward Sam Kerr rounded out the top three. Lieke Martens, Sandra Panos, and Irene Paredes were the other Barcelona players in the running.

Megan Rapinoe won the trophy in 2019, while Ada Hegerberg won the inaugural edition of the honor in 2018. The Ballon d’Or wasn’t awarded last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ronaldo accuses Ballon d'Or organizer of lying about Messi rivalry

Cristiano Ronaldo rejected claims that his only ambition is to end his career with more Ballon d’Or awards than rival Lionel Messi.

In an interview with The New York Times last week, Ballon d’Or organizer and editor-in-chief of France Football Pascal Ferre said, “Ronaldo has only one ambition, and that is to retire with more Ballon d’Or than Messi.”

The Manchester United superstar responded shortly before Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in France, accusing Ferre of lying.

“Today’s outcome explains why Pascal Ferre’s statements last week, when he said that I confided in him that my only ambition was to finish my career with more Ballons d’Or than Lionel Messi,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram, as translated by ESPN.

“Pascal Ferre lied, he used my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for.

“It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious prize could lie in this way, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or.”

Ronaldo didn’t attend Monday’s event despite being named on the shortlist for this year’s prize. Messi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain last summer, went on to win the Ballon d’Or for a record-extending seventh time, while Ronaldo finished sixth and outside the top three in voting for the first time since 2010.

Ferre attributed Ronaldo’s absence to a disagreement over quarantine rules, which the five-time Ballon d’Or winner denied.

“The biggest ambition of my career is to win national and international titles for the clubs I represent and for the national team in my country,” Ronaldo added.

“The biggest ambition of my career is to be a good example for all those who are or want to be professional footballers.

“The biggest ambition of my career is to leave my name written in golden letters in the history of world football.”

Ronaldo and Messi were fierce rivals for a decade in Spain and were constantly compared to each other as they broke record after record at Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.
