Juve, Barca, Real Madrid admitted to Champions League next season

Juventus, Barcelona, and Real Madrid will be allowed to partake in the Champions League next season despite their unwillingness to distance themselves from the doomed Super League project.

“Admission letters have been sent to all clubs participating in next season’s UEFA club competitions today,” UEFA told Reuters on Tuesday, according to ESPN.

There were suggestions in recent months, primarily from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, that the three teams still clinging to the infamous Super League could be banned from the Champions League.

UEFA suspended disciplinary proceedings against the trio earlier this month. Ceferin was adamant the proceedings will resume.

The nine other clubs that originally signed up for the Super League have since withdrawn from the breakaway competition, leaving just the aforementioned group of three.

Juve finished fourth in Serie A this past season, securing their top-four spot on the final day of the campaign. Real Madrid and Barcelona, meanwhile, finished second and third in La Liga, respectively, behind champions Atletico Madrid.

Peter Schmeichel: 'Ridiculous decision' to play on after Eriksen emergency

Danish legend Peter Schmeichel slammed UEFA for lacking compassion when it allowed Denmark’s Euro 2020 meeting with Finland to continue after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.

Eriksen, 29, remains in stable condition following his medical emergency late in the first half of Saturday’s match, the Danish Football Federation said Sunday. The playmaker was given CPR and treated on the pitch for around 10 minutes before being taken to a Copenhagen hospital.

Many of Denmark’s players were extremely emotional as the scenes unfolded – including Schmeichel’s son, Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper – but the game eventually resumed due to a request “made by players of both teams,” according to UEFA.

“It’s a ridiculous decision by UEFA. They should have tried to work out a different scenario and shown a little bit of compassion, and they didn’t,” Schmeichel said, per BBC Sport.

UEFA gave the players two options: to finish the fixture later on Saturday or to complete it Sunday, BBC Sport reports. After learning that Eriksen was conscious in hospital, both teams opted for the former option in a collective meeting.

“That would be the worst two hours in my time in football,” Schmeichel, a Euro 1992 winner with Denmark, continued.

“Something terrible like that happens and UEFA gives the players an option to go out and play the game or come back at 12:00 on Sunday. What kind of option is that? The result of the game is completely irrelevant. I mean, how can you play?”

The incident was followed by numerous tributes across the game. Eriksen’s Inter Milan teammate Romelu Lukaku and his former Tottenham Hotspur colleague Heung-Min Son both expressed their love for the midfielder during their goal celebrations while on duty with Belgium and South Korea, respectively. Fans of Denmark and Finland chanted Eriksen’s name at Parken Stadium before the match restarted.

Finland went on to win the group-stage affair, 1-0.

Denmark's Eriksen stable after collapsing during Euro 2020 match

Christian Eriksen is stable in hospital after collapsing on the pitch during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland on Saturday, UEFA announced.

The Danish Football Federation said the 29-year-old is awake and will undergo further examinations.

Eriksen fell to the ground late in the first half of Saturday’s game in Copenhagen while walking to the touchline after the ball had gone out of play. His Danish teammates quickly surrounded him and gestured furiously for medical personnel. Medics arrived on the scene to administer CPR while Denmark’s players shielded the Inter Milan midfielder for privacy.

He was stretchered off after receiving treatment for roughly 10 minutes as both sets of players and a silent crowd watched on. Many on the field were in tears.

Danish captain Simon Kjaer and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel comforted Eriksen’s partner, Sabrina Kvist Jensen, who had rushed down to field level after the incident.

“I want to start by saying that I’ve had a talk with Christian’s family,” Denmark’s team doctor Morten Boesen told reporters. “We were called on to the pitch when Christian fell down. I didn’t see it myself, but it was pretty clear that he was unconscious. When I got to him, he is on his side. He is breathing and I can feel his pulse, but suddenly that changes. And as everyone saw, we started giving him CPR.”

Peter Moeller, director of the nation’s football federation, said Eriksen received a “heart massage” on the pitch.

UEFA initially suspended the match due to the medical emergency. The fixture eventually resumed, with the governing body announcing that the players asked to continue during a collective meeting.

“Following the request made by players of both teams, UEFA has agreed to restart the match,” it said.

The teams returned to the field after more than 90 minutes and were welcomed by a loud ovation from the crowd, which had earlier been chanting Eriksen’s name in unison. Finland went on to win the match, 1-0.

Belgium’s game against Russia, the last of the day’s scheduled contests, went ahead as planned, with Romelu Lukaku delivering a heartfelt message to his club teammate Eriksen after scoring a goal.

Report: Italy star Donnarumma agrees to join PSG as free agent

Paris Saint-Germain have seemingly won the race for Gianluigi Donnarumma’s coveted signature.

The Italian goalkeeper has reached a verbal agreement with the French club on a five-year contract, reports Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian. PSG beat out competition from Juventus and Barcelona for the 22-year-old.

The former AC Milan shot-stopper is expected to undergo medicals while stationed at Italy’s Euro 2020 camp, Romano adds. Donnarumma was between the sticks for the Azzurri’s commanding 3-0 win over Turkey on Friday in Rome.

Donnarumma made over 200 appearances for Milan after graduating from the club’s academy. His senior debut came as a 16-year-old.

The Rossoneri and the player’s infamous agent, Mino Raiola, couldn’t come to terms on a new contract, making Donnarumma a free agent this summer.

His expected arrival means Mauricio Pochettino will have a pair of top-class netminders on his hands next season, as incumbent starter Keylor Navas recently extended his own deal with the club until 2024.
