Report: Seattle's Thomas fined for middle finger

A leg has cost Earl Thomas the rest of his season; a finger has cost the Seattle Seahawks safety over $13,000.

  • The Seahawks having a terrible O-line is a myth, and we have proof. Our new pass-blocking metric shows it’s on the quarterback.

  • Earl Thomas’ season-ending injury means the final member of the Legion has likely played his last snap for Seattle.

The veteran has been fined $13,369 by the NFL for giving the middle finger as he was carted off the field in last Sunday’s victory at the Arizona Cardinals, according to a Seattle Times report.

Thomas, who held out all offseason in protest of his contract situation and returned without a new deal, was carted off the field with his leg in an air cast midway through the third quarter. He gave the middle finger in what appeared to be the direction of Seattle’s sideline as he was being taken into the locker room.

Because the act occurred outside the field of play, no penalty was assessed during the game. However, in fining Thomas, the league determined the moment should be considered unsportsmanlike conduct, the Seattle Times reported.

“I don’t know exactly what the intention of that was,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told KIRO-AM 710 ESPN Seattle on Monday. “I didn’t see it and I don’t know what the intention was there, and I’m not jumping to conclusions on that. There’s nothing for us to talk about at this point.”

Thomas has taken heat for the gesture, but Carroll said people need to cut the 29-year-old “a little slack.”

“People that are criticizing whatever happened don’t understand,” Carroll said. “This was an earth-shattering moment for a kid. He’s trying to play this game he loves and all of sudden this happens again. He knew exactly what happened to him, so he went right to what it’s going to take to get back.”

ESPN’s Brady Henderson contributed to this report.

Liverpool's Klopp says Keita could feature vs. City despite injury scare

Liverpool fans received positive news Friday as manager Jurgen Klopp said Naby Keita could make an appearance during Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester City.

“Not 100 percent sure, he had a back spasm. So we have to wait a little bit,” Klopp said of Keita.

“He will be in today; if he can do something on the training ground, I don’t know. I spoke to the doc this morning but he didn’t know. We have to see him again in a few minutes and then we will make a decision about that.”

The midfielder suffered the injury during Wednesday’s Champions League match against Napoli, and was removed from the pitch on a stretcher. Reports later suggested Keita was dealing with a heart problem.

But Ciro Mauro of Cardarelli Hospital in Naples, where Keita was evaluated, said the injury was not related to a cardiovascular problem, and that the midfielder had already been discharged. He later joked, as translated by Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph, that doctors had suggested keeping Keita for more tests so he’d miss the return leg when Napoli travel to Liverpool.

“We’ve recommended a long period of recovery so that he won’t play in Liverpool-Napoli,” Mauro said.

Liverpool, who fell 1-0 to the Italian side in the first leg of their Champions League tie, will look to regain top spot in the Premier League with a victory over defending champion Manchester City on Sunday. Despite both sides sitting on 19 points through seven matches, Pep Guardiola’s men hold the advantage thanks their superior goal differential.

Chargers WR Benjamin (foot) to miss 2-3 weeks

COSTA MESA, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers will be without the services of receiver Travis Benjamin for at least two more weeks, with the earliest he could return to the field being a Week 8 contest against the Tennessee Titans in London.

Benjamin was active last week against the San Francisco 49ers but only played five snaps after re-aggravating a foot injury that forced him to miss the previous two games against the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams.

Benjamin had a cast on his right foot and did not practice this week to promote healing.

“He’s a speed guy,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “It’s not like it’s a hamstring or an upper body injury, so he has to feel good about it before he gets out there. So we put him in the cast to take some of the pressure off his foot, just so he’s not trying to practice.”

Lynn went on to say that Benjamin has a heel injury and the team will let him rest for a few weeks.

Benjamin, 28, played in all 16 games for the Chargers last season, finishing with 34 receptions for 567 yards and four touchdowns. He has totaled just two receptions for 3 yards in one game this season — the opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Also on the injury front for the Chargers, defensive end Joey Bosa and linebacker Kyzir White have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders, while right tackle Joe Barksdale is doubtful and left tackle Russell Okung is questionable.

Bosa has a bruised left foot and is not expected back until after the team’s bye week against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9 at the earliest, while White had knee surgery earlier this week.

Lynn said Okung (groin), who was a limited participant in practice on Friday, will be a game-time decision.

Serbia president blasts PSG fans as 'bandits and hooligans'

Belgrade – Serbia president Aleksandar Vucic on Friday blasted fans of Paris Saint Germain as “bandits and hooligans” after a stormy Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade in the French capital.

“We are going to ask for the names of the bandits and hooligans who attacked supporters of Red Star Belgrade with batons,” said Vucic in remarks quoted by national press agency Beta.

“We want to see them punished.”

Supporters of the two sides clashed after Wednesday’s game at the Parc des Princes which was won 6-1 by the French champions with around 300-400 hooded fans met with tear gas by French riot police.
