Solskjaer wanted Haaland and Kane at Man United, calls Ronaldo signing a mistake

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted it was a mistake to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United and revealed that he wanted to pursue several high-profile stars, including Erling Haaland and Harry Kane, before getting sacked.

In his first in-depth interview since United dismissed him two years ago, the Norwegian coach said that signing the aging Portuguese star, who was 36 at the time, in the summer of 2021 “felt so right.” But Ronaldo’s second spell at Old Trafford was ultimately detrimental to Solskjaer’s future as the team’s manager.

“It was a decision that was very difficult to turn down, and I felt we had to take it, but it turned out wrong,” the 50-year-old said in an interview with The Athletic’s Andy Mitten.

“It felt so right when he signed, and the fans felt that at that Newcastle game, when Old Trafford was rocking (after Ronaldo scored twice in a 4-1 win). He was still one of the best goalscorers in the world, he was looking strong.”

The honeymoon period didn’t last long, as United went on to beat West Ham on Sept. 19 before winning just one of their next seven Premier League games. The string of poor results ended with a 4-1 loss to Watford on Nov. 21, Solskjaer’s last match in charge before officially fired. He told players during that match that he expected to lose his job.

While Ronaldo’s arrival failed to produce the desired results, Solskjaer, who United hired as manager in December 2018, said the club couldn’t buy players he identified as transfer targets.

He pointed to players like, “Erling Haaland, before he made his Salzburg debut. Declan Rice, who wouldn’t have cost what he did in the summer. We discussed Moises Caicedo, but we felt we needed players ready for there and then.

Solskjaer added: “We wanted Jude Bellingham badly – he’s a Man United player, but I respect he chose Dortmund. That was probably sensible. But it’s why I respect Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Dan James, and Jadon (Sancho). Young players prepared to come into a team that wasn’t 100% there like it was when I arrived.

“I would have signed Kane every day of the week, and my understanding was that he wanted to come. But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from COVID-19, there was no bottomless pit.”

Solskjaer suggested the changing attitudes of some team members made his squad unrecognizable in November 2021 before United fired him compared to just two months prior.

“Some players felt they should’ve played more and weren’t constructive to the environment. That’s a huge sin for me. When I didn’t start games, I wanted to prove to the manager he’d made the wrong decision,” Solskjaer said.

“Now, a lot of players aren’t like that. Agents and family members get into their heads and tell them they’re better than they are because they have a vested interest. It’s a disease of modern football.”

Solskjaer said that his issues with some of the players were related to what he perceived to be inflated egos, adding that numerous players rejected the opportunity to become club captain.

“Some weren’t as good as their own perception of themselves. I won’t name names, but I was very disappointed when a couple turned down the chance to be captain,” he said. “I was also disappointed when others said they wouldn’t play or train because they wanted to force their way out.”

Erik ten Hag replaced Solskjaer’s successor, Ralf Rangnick, as Manchester United manager in 2022 but is now experiencing a similar dip in form, with the team sitting 13th after five games with just six points. Jeers rained down on the United boss last weekend following his controversial decision to substitute new signing Rasmus Hojlund during the club’s decisive loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.

“I know what he’s going through,” Solskjaer said about Ten Hag. “It’s a dream job, but it’s difficult. You’re dealing with humans with all their problems and backgrounds – this isn’t a computer simulation. But most are good professionals who want to do well. Some think about No. 1 first, most think of the club.”

Watch: Bellingham scores late to snatch Real Madrid win over Union Berlin

Jude Bellingham can’t be stopped.

The English midfielder continued his red-hot start to life at Real Madrid by scoring deep into stoppage time Wednesday, seizing a 1-0 victory over Union Berlin in the Champions League.

A powerful shot from Federico Valverde in the 94th minute ricocheted into Bellingham’s path for an easy tap-in.

“I am new to the club, but I have had a TV since I was little, and since I can’t remember what age, I have been watching Real Madrid make comebacks from situations you thought impossible,” Bellingham told TNT Sports postmatch, according to BBC Sport.

It was the 20-year-old’s sixth goal in six games with Madrid, including four game-winning strikes.

For Union Berlin, it was a bitter end to a promising evening. Four years after being promoted to Germany’s top flight, Union Berlin were within minutes of ending Real Madrid’s 68-match streak of scoring a goal at home.

But a famous result against the 14-time Champions League winners didn’t come to fruition, as manager Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid side emerged from the Group C contest victorious and maintained an unblemished record in all competitions to start the campaign.

Watch: Howler from contrite Onana costs Man United in loss to Bayern

Manchester United avoided getting embarrassed in Germany after some shaky goalkeeping in their opening Champions League game, losing 4-3 against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

After a promising opening to the game, the wheels started to fall off for Manchester United after Leroy Sane’s shot in the 28th minute slipped through Andre Onana’s hands to give the hosts a first-half lead.

“We started very good. After my mistake, we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, for me,” Onana told TNT Sports post-match, according to BBC Sport.

The blunder was the latest blemish this season for the Cameroonian goalkeeper, who has struggled since joining Manchester United from Inter Milan.

“I have a lot to prove. My start in Manchester hasn’t been so good, not how I want. This was one of my worst games,” Onana said.

“It’s a tough time. We have to be together and work hard,” he added.

Bayern Munich doubled their lead shortly after the opening goal when Serge Gnabry beat Onana from inside the penalty area in the 32nd minute.

In the second half, Rasmus Hojlund scored his first Manchester United goal before Harry Kane converted a penalty to restore Bayern’s two-goal advantage. Then Bayern Munich wiped out another United comeback bid after Casemiro’s strike was canceled out by Mathys Tel’s goal.

Onana has now conceded 14 goals in six games in all competitions.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers pulled out a 30-12 victory over the New York Giants on Thursday night, and while the 49ers may not have looked unbeatable, they did more than enough to handle a banged-up opponent.

The Giants kept hanging around until the fourth quarter, when the Niners put it away late. Here’s what to know about each team’s performance:

San Francisco 49ers

It wasn’t always pretty, and it wasn’t as easy as the final score might indicate, but the 49ers took care of business.

On a short week, the Niners, without injured receiver Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder), labored through the win. While the Giants were short-handed in their second game of a West Coast swing, there’s no need for the 49ers to apologize for another victory as San Francisco moved to 3-0 for just the second time in the past 25 years.

But if this win taught anything, it’s that Aiyuk’s value to the Niners should not be discounted. The Giants entered this game having blitzed more than any team in the league since the start of 2022. They lived up to that reputation, relentlessly sending extra rushers at 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Those blitzes were effective in the first half, not only in pressuring Purdy but in causing him to be off target and forcing Niners coach Kyle Shanahan to resort to more screens and quick passes instead of the intermediate routes he often prefers.

NFL in London: Falcons vs. Jaguars

The Falcons take on the Jaguars at London’s iconic Wembley Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 9:30 a.m. ET exclusively on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and get access to live NFL games, highlights, originals, premium articles, analysis and more.

That is where Aiyuk would have made a difference. Dating to the start of last season, Aiyuk has 50 catches (tied for 8th in the NFL) for 679 yards (tied for 9th) against man coverage. Nobody on the Niners more consistently and quickly beats man coverage than Aiyuk.

In the second half, fellow wideout Deebo Samuel (six catches for 129 yards and a touchdown) and tight end George Kittle (seven receptions for 90 yards) helped pick up the slack, and the Niners defense dominated the Giants.

To be sure, the 49ers did the right thing keeping Aiyuk, whom they’d like to sign to a contract extension in the offseason, out Thursday night so he can use the extra rest to get healthy for the long haul. But his absence should also only bolster how much they value him for the rest of this season. And beyond.

QB breakdown: With defenders constantly in his face, Purdy had a bit of an odd night, though his final numbers turned out quite good. Purdy finished 25 of 37 for 310 yards with two touchdowns for a passer rating of 111.3. Purdy put the ball in harm’s way a handful of times and was fortunate to avoid turnovers in the first half, but he was outstanding on third down and came on late in the game. It wasn’t his best performance, but Purdy is now one of only four quarterbacks to start a career with at least eight straight regular season wins in the Super Bowl Era (since 1966).

Purdy was blitzed on 74% of his dropbacks, the highest blitz rate faced by a QB with 30 dropbacks since Colin Kaepernick in 2013 (88% vs Cardinals). The 29 blitzes Purdy faced were more than double his previous high (14). Purdy’s 236 passing yards against the blitz were the most by a passer since Aaron Rodgers in 2021.

Troubling trend: The Niners entered the night tied for the fifth-most penalties in the league and did nothing to assuage those concerns against the Giants. San Francisco finished with six penalties for 71 yards, including two for 37 yards that set up New York’s first touchdown of the game.

Eye-popping stat: After scoring on a four-yard run in the first half, Niners running back Christian McCaffrey now has a touchdown in 12 consecutive games (including playoffs), tying him with Jerry Rice for the longest streak in franchise history. Lenny Moore has the record for most consecutive games with a TD — including playoffs — at 17. — Nick Wagoner

New York Giants

This wasn’t a no-contest like the 40-0 opening loss to Dallas. The shorthanded Giants hung around Thursday night, keeping it within a score into the fourth quarter.

Ultimately, the Giants couldn’t beat the more talented 49ers, especially with a couple bounces and costly penalties going against them. But it wasn’t for a lack of effort. The Giants would’ve had to play a perfect game in order to win on the road in prime time without four starters (running back

Pivotal play: The roughing-the-passer penalty on Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams with 1:51 left in the second quarter. San Francisco had a third-and-12 while leading 10-3 at the Giants’ 20-yard line with just under two minutes remaining in the half. Williams beat his man and hit Purdy as the ball was released. The penalty likely was called because Williams landed on Purdy with all his weight. It was a game-changing call because it gave San Francisco a first-and-goal instead of a fourth down. McCaffrey ran it in for a six-yard touchdown on the very next play to make it 17-3.

Bold prediction for next week: The Giants play on Monday night, and that gives Barkley and his high ankle sprain another 11 days to get right. But … he still won’t be ready. We’ve seen this story before. Barkley always wants to play and pushes to get back sooner than expected. However, it’s in his — and the team’s — best interest for the standout running back to get right before returning.

Eye-popping stat: The 49ers converted a third-and-15 and third-and-13 on screen passes on the same drive in the second quarter. It ended with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Bell and a 10-3 lead. There were 25 screen passes attempted on third-and-10+ the first two weeks of the season. Only one was converted for a first down, until Thursday night. — Jordan Raanan

Next game: vs. Seahawks (8:15 p.m. ET, Oct. 2)
