HOFer Greene endorses Mehri for NFLPA top job

Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle Joe Greene is endorsing Cyrus Mehri in his candidacy for NFLPA executive director.

Mehri, a civil rights attorney who co-wrote the NFL’s Rooney Rule, said last week that he plans to challenge DeMaurice Smith for his job as executive director of the NFL Players Association.

“We need someone well versed in labor law who is also a people person capable of relating to players,” Greene said in a statement. “Cyrus has that perfect mix. I have known him for a number of years through the Fritz Pollard Alliance and he knows our League very well. He will fight for players past, present and future. He is an extraordinary candidate and I am so grateful he has put his hat in the ring. The players should have a choice.”

Greene joins Jim Brown, Harry Carson and Kellen Winslow Sr. as former NFL stars who are supporting Mehri’s candidacy.

There is a chance, however, that Mehri won’t even be given a chance to run against Smith.

The NFL Players Association changed procedures for electing its executive director, creating the possibility that Smith could be reappointed without challengers this fall, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.

Union rules now call for a selection committee to vote by Oct. 15 on whether to extend Smith’s contract, which expires in March 2018. If approved by all 14 members of the committee, Smith will continue as executive director for another term. The job will not be declared “open” unless less than half of the committee votes its approval.

Harvey flooding forces Texans to play at Dallas

FRISCO, Texas — Due to the flooding from Hurricane Harvey, Thursday’s preseason game between the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys, originally scheduled to be played at NRG Stadium, has been moved to AT&T Stadium.

  • The Astros will play their upcoming home series against the Rangers in St. Petersburg, Florida, after the teams were unable to agree to a scenario in which they would play this week’s games in Arlington, Texas.

  • The AdvoCare Texas Kickoff between BYU and LSU, originally scheduled to be played at NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday, has been relocated to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey.

The Texans have been in the Dallas area since early Sunday morning. The team played a preseason game in New Orleans on Saturday and could not return to Houston because of the inclement weather caused by Hurricane Harvey, now classified as a Tropical Storm.

The Texans practiced at the Cowboys’ facility on Monday and are scheduled to do so on Tuesday as well.

Earlier Monday, Texans defensive end J.J. Watt said that if a game was going to be played this week, it should involve fundraising to help Houston residents affected by the flooding. On Saturday, Watt started an online fundraiser to raise money for flood relief efforts. As of Monday evening, it had raised nearly $750,000.

The Texans and owner Bob McNair also donated $1 million to the United Way of Greater Houston Flood Relief Fund. The NFL Foundation said it would match the $1 million donation.

In a release, the NFL said it will work with the Texans to “continue to closely monitor the situation in Houston and adjust the team’s plans as necessary.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Chicago Bears suspect wide receiver Cameron Meredith injured his left ACL during the first quarter of Sunday’s preseason game at Tennessee, according to coach John Fox.

Meredith was carted off the field after being tackled low by safety Johnathan Cyprien at the end of a 16-yard reception. Meredith’s left leg twisted upon contact as he braced for the hit.

He was writhing in pain for a few minutes before being helped onto a cart with an air cast supporting his left leg.

  • Kevin White has just 19 catches in his career with the Bears, who now are counting on him to play like the first-round pick he was back in 2015.

“You feel bad, obviously,” Fox said. “He’s disappointed. He’ll bounce back.”

Fox said the team will know more about Meredith’s status following an MRI.

The Bears quickly ruled Meredith out for the game, which they won 19-7.

Meredith — a former undrafted free agent — led the Bears with 66 receptions for 888 yards and four touchdowns last year.

He had missed a portion of the Bears’ offseason program after tearing ligaments in his thumb, but the 6-foot-3 receiver returned for training camp and appeared to develop strong chemistry with starting quarterback Mike Glennon.

Losing Meredith for any extended period of time would be devastating for the Bears, who allowed receiver Alshon Jeffery to leave via free agency in the offseason. Chicago is also without veteran receiver Markus Wheaton, who is recovering from left finger surgery.

Bears long-snapper Patrick Scales also left Sunday’s game with a knee injury, which the team believes is serious, according to Fox.

Cornerback Prince Amukamara played one series before leaving with an injured ankle. He was on crutches after the game, as was Scales.

ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson and The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Bills' Taylor ruled out early after concussion

Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been ruled out of Saturday night’s preseason game in Baltimore with a concussion.

Taylor had entered the concussion protocol after being taken to the locker room during the first quarter.

The QB appeared to fall hard on the back of his head on a third-down sack by Baltimore Ravens linebacker Matthew Judon. Taylor remained on the ground for several moments before coming to his feet and being met by trainers on the field.

  • Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus has been sent home from Baltimore for violating an unspecified team rule, the team confirmed Saturday.

Rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman replaced Taylor on the next possession, the Bills’ third of the game. Peterman was a fifth-round pick of the Bills in April.

Taylor, the Bills’ starting quarterback since 2015, completed 1 of 3 passes for 1 yard before leaving.

Ravens kicker Justin Tucker also was placed in the concussion protocol before being cleared to return.
